{"id":67728,"date":"2023-10-03T09:03:55","date_gmt":"2023-10-03T09:03:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rapidcelnews.com\/?p=67728"},"modified":"2023-10-03T09:03:55","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T09:03:55","slug":"dame-helen-mirren-makes-u-turn-over-sexist-sir-michael-parkinson-interview","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rapidcelnews.com\/entertainment\/dame-helen-mirren-makes-u-turn-over-sexist-sir-michael-parkinson-interview\/","title":{"rendered":"Dame Helen Mirren makes U-turn over &#039;sexist&#039; Sir Michael Parkinson interview"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/SEC_174314982-eebd.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>Dame Helen Mirren has admitted she actually felt \u2018sorry\u2019 for Sir Michael Parkinson after their tense interview in 1975.<\/p>\n<p>Their conversation went down in television history after the late broadcaster, who died in August aged 88, repeatedly referenced the then-30-year-old star\u2019s \u2018physical attributes\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>He went onto ask her if her \u2018equipment\u2019 distracted audiences and even if serious actresses could have \u2018big bosoms\u2019, which led to her branding Sir Michael \u2018sexist\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Dame Helen, now 78, called him a \u2018sexist old fart\u2019 for the comments, and in 2019 she claimed she got the brunt of the backlash for the interview by being \u2018argumentative\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>However, in the new issue of Radio Times she has given a much more nuanced reaction to the TV appearance, and insisted \u2018in lots of ways he was right\u2019 with what he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I didn\u2019t feel sorry for Parky, but then in a way I did because in lots of ways he was right,\u2019 she said. \u2018My physicality did get in the way of me being taken seriously as a classical actress.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/themes\/metro-parent\/img\/fallback.png\"><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Helen Mirren   The sexist Parkinson s interview 1:2\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5VuvyItN3es?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>She also acknowledged that \u2018times change\u2019, adding: \u2018Yes, yes they really do. And fast. And we can only kick down the patriarchy one brick at a time.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>And she pointed to the way Sir Michael \u2013 who never apologised to her for the interview \u2013 invited Sir Elton John onto his programme after he was \u2018outed in a bad way\u2019 by the media.<\/p>\n<p>She revealed: \u2018Parky invited Elton on to his show so that they could talk about it properly. He held out a hand and helped Elton John at a very important moment. So I don\u2019t want to diss Parky.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2019, Dame Helen told Flaunt magazine that Sir Michael \u2018never saw\u2019 why the interview got such a bad reputation over the years.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He did blow it that once, because, you know, he didn\u2019t know any different,\u2019 she said at the time. \u2018I mentioned it to him again years later and he never saw what was wrong with it. He never could quite grasp it.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The same year, Sir Michael appeared on Piers Morgan\u2019s Life Stories and while he admitted the interview was \u2019embarrassing\u2019 despite being \u2018of its time\u2019, he added: \u2018Well, maybe [the comments were sexist].
