Sarah Ferguson has revealed how she thinks she looks ‘very pretty and slim’ when she looks back at photos from the 1980s – despite having body image issues at the time.

The Duchess of York, 64, who has in the past been candid about her struggles with disordered eating, spoke as she made her debut as a Loose Women guest today.

‘The other day I was looking back all through the 80s when I was wearing those ridiculous clothes…

‘And I look back and I think actually you’re very pretty! And you were quite slim and you look lovely and in 1986 the nation stopped for my wedding, and you know it was a great dress,’ the mother-of-two said.

‘But honestly from that moment I had such… self-hatred. So much so,’ she added.

The Duchess of York, 64, who has in the past been candid about her struggles with disordered eating, spoke as she made her debut as a Loose Women guest today

Elsewhere the duchess admitted that her relationship with her body has evolved, following a breast cancer diagnosis and mastectomy earlier this year.

She revealed she now finds her breasts a ‘badge of honour’ because of her operation scars and is ‘proud’ of them.

She said: ‘I remember Eugenie at her wedding – and she has a scoliosis scar down her back – and she wore a V-neck wedding dress. And I thought, good for you, you’re wearing your scar.’

She then joked that if she walked around showing her scar ‘with no clothes on, it would cause a little bit of a front page’.

The duchess has always been very open about her body image struggles which stemmed from her childhood and was propelled by cruel comments.

The novel, titled Demons Land, is part of a 22-book deal the Duchess of York signed with Australian based publisher, Serenity Press and will be co-authored by Michelle Worthington.

Sarah, Duchess of York (pregnant with Princess Beatrice) visiting Windlesham, Surrey in 1988

The mother-of-two admitted that she was recently reflecting on finding photos of herself in the 1980s ‘very pretty’ (pictured in 1988 at premiere of White Mischief in London)

Sarah has previously opened up about developing issues with eating as a child, turning to food for comfort when her mother left.

Speaking on a podcast with ayurvedic doctor and naturopath Dr Vijay Murthy, she said: ‘I was a binge-eater. I never could get bulimia because I just didn’t have that mental state to go that far, but I always wished I could.

‘But that just shows you how dangerous and what place I got to. To wish you could have a mental illness to that level is a very serious place to get to.’

Asked how she got into such a state, she replies: ‘My body and mind was in that place, but I couldn’t actually act out to make myself sick.’

The late Princess Diana, Sarah said, was the only person who understood the pressure Fergie and she were under, and the Duchess said she thinks about her old friend all the time.

When she entered the limelight in the 1980s at Prince Andrew’s wife, the comments about her looks intensified and so did her anxiety (pictured at Middlesex Hospital Teenage Cancer Unit, 1990)

Sarah admitted her wedding dress was ‘great’ saying she looks back now and thinks ‘you’re very pretty’ (pictured with Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, on their wedding day, in 1986)

Sarah said she was proud of her daughter Eugenie for showing off her scoliosis operation scar down her back – when she wore a V-neck wedding dress (pictured in 2018)

The late Princess Diana, (left) Sarah said, was the only person who understood the pressure Fergie and she were under, and the Duchess said she thinks about her old friend all the time (pictured together in 1988)

In 2011, Sarah admitted to once having a ‘diabolical relationship’ with her body, saying she was an ’emotional eater’.

She told the Australian magazine New Idea that not even her marriage to Prince Andrew made up for the years when she was taunted for being Fat Fergie or the Duchess of Pork.

‘If you’ve been called fat and ugly and lots of names when you’re growing up, as I was, you believe it the whole of your life,’ she explained.

‘Of course, some people don’t realise what they are doing – they saw it as fun, thought it was only teasing. But it meant that I never believed I was pretty. On my wedding day I was a good weight and I looked really beautiful, but I didn’t see that.

‘I look back and think ‘How sad’. But you can’t live with regret, because that’s a thief of the present, and we have to remain in the present.’

The former Weight Watchers ambassador attributed her new found self-confidence to the advice of American talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.

Sarah was taking part in a reality television series filmed by Oprah’s TV channel, called Finding Sarah.

‘I’m a lady so I don’t need to say how much I weigh,’ she said.

‘I know that I was at my heaviest when I was pregnant with Beatrice but I have no idea what size I was.

‘But that’s all ancient history. I think that over the past year, Oprah has opened my eyes so much. I have learned to love myself.’
