The Prince and Princess of Wales have sent a special birthday message to King Charles via social media as he celebrates his landmark 75th birthday today (November 14).

The post was shared with the couple's 14.9 million followers and contains three images of the monarch over the years, with a caption reading: "Wishing His Majesty The King a very happy 75th birthday!"

The first photo shows Charles posing for a photograph with Prince William during a skiing trip to Klosters in 2004 – the same trip where he was first introduced to his future daughter-in-law.

Meanwhile, the second is a solo image of the monarch taking part in an oak tree planting during his state visit to France earlier this year and the third is from Trooping the Colour back in June as the family gathered on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

The post was instantly flooded with messages from well wishers reciprocating the birthday message to the King.

As for how Charles is expected to celebrate, it is thought he will mark the day privately with friends and family this evening – but only after a busy day of engagements and official duties.

The King's dedication to his role is often commented upon, even by members of his own family.

At an engagement together in south-west India in 2013, Queen Camilla once spoke candidly about her husband’s tireless approach to his role, saying, “He always has to finish something. He is so in the zone, working, working, working.”

Charles was celebrating his 65th birthday during that particular tour and Camilla had hoped to convince her husband to “chill out completely”.

She revealed: “If there’s a little hint of sun I might just persuade him to go for a walk or sit outside. He loves walking, so that might do it. We see the sun all the time but we never get the chance to just go and sit in it. So that would be bliss. So maybe I will persuade him. But no, my husband is not one for chilling.”

King Charles Philip Arthur George was born on November 14, 1948 at Buckingham Palace to The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh (later Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip).

He was the first child for the couple and would later be joined by siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward. Unlike current royal births where we typically find out the name of the new royal baby within a few days, the King's name wasn't announced until a month after he was born.

Throughout his life, the King has achieved many milestones – from becoming the longest serving Prince of Wales in history and being the eldest person to ever accede to the throne.
