The team wrote that hot water bottles have a risk of splitting or leaking, causing harm.

Don’t miss… State pension warning as hundreds of thousands at risk of unexpected tax bill

They added: “That’s not to say a bottle that’s less than two years old has no chance of splitting or leaking, or that any bottle over two years old will definitely be dangerous. A lot depends on how often you use it, how you store it and more.”

The bottles have a “flower wheel” on the funnel which shows the date it will be made. The number in the centre of the wheel refers to the year for example, 18 is 2018.

The segments around the wheel will indicate the month the bottle was made. So if it has six dots around the segment, the bottle will be from June.

However other models may have dots in one segment for example in the sixth if it was made in June. The number of dots in the final filled section shows which week of that month the bottle was made.

The money saving expert team also issued advice on how to properly use and store your hot water bottle, including using both hot and cold water, checking it for leaks and never filling with boiling water. More can be found here.

So how do you check your hot water bottle?
