Doctor Who’s best bits: From THAT beach goodbye to Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the first female Time Lord and Tom Baker’s jelly babies catchphrase… a look at the show’s most iconic moments ahead of the 60th anniversary special

Doctor Who fans are eagerly awaiting the return of the beloved sci-fi franchise on Saturday night as the hotly-anticipated 60th anniversary special will arrive on screens.

The first of three special episodes will see the Tenth Doctor David Tennant once again take on the role of the titular Time Lord as he returns to the franchise, much to the delight of fans.

He will be making a comeback to the BBC show alongside Catherine Tate, who portrayed his companion Donna Noble, 15 years after they last travelled in the TARDIS together.

The beloved pair will front the trio of 60th anniversary specials before Ncuti Gatwa takes over the role of The Doctor on Christmas Day, in an episode titled The Church On Ruby Road.

David’s return came as part of a reverse regeneration storyline which saw the Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker transform back into David’s version of the Doctor in her final episode, The Power of the Doctor.

David’s first run as the Doctor played host to a whole array of memorable moments, including that famous tear-jerking beach goodbye with Rose Tyler (Billie Piper).

As the show returns to screens for the much-awaited 60th anniversary, MailOnline takes a look back at the franchise’s most iconic and historic moments ever since its 1963 launch.

Memories: Doctor Who will return to screens for its 60th anniversary on Saturday, with David Tennant again transforming into the Doctor. From his iconic beach goodbye with Rose Tyler (Billie Piper), MailOnline looks at the show’s best bits

THE SERIES THAT STARTED IT ALL

When the sci-fi series launched in 1963, William Hartnell was the first actor to take to the screen as the titular Time Lord, and he held the role until his departure in 1966.

The series kicked off with the Doctor crashing to Earth with his granddaughter Susan after being ‘exiled’ from their planet Gallifrey – the only member of the Doctor’s family to join him on his travels.

Despite shaky effects and the black-and-white filming, the first series is remember fondly by die-hard fans and was re-imagined in the 2013 TV film Adventures Across Space and Time with David Bradley taking on William’s role.

Travelling through space and time with Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright, the team came across the series’ most formidable foe The Daleks, with the robots notorious for their never-ending hatred for the Doctor and chasing him through the cosmos.

It was in this time the Doctor parted ways with Susan after she fell in love with human resistance fighter David Campbell in the 22nd Century.

The Doctor also came across the Cybermen in this era after they were first created as a ‘better’ version of humanity, with any and all emotions removed from their minds.

But years of travel eventually took their toll on the ageing Doctor, and it was after a battle with the Cybermen that he collapsed in the TARDIS with his companions Polly and Ben Jackson, transforming into the second incarnation.

RETURN OF FAMILIAR ENEMIES

Patrick Troughton then took over as the second doctor in 1966 and remained on screens for the next three years, during which time a whole host of familiar enemies made their return to the franchise.

As he embarked on plenty of travels with partner Jamie McCrimmon (Frazer Hines), he tackled familiar foes such as the Daleks and Cybermen, and also encountered new enemies such as the Great Intelligence and the Ice Warriors, who have also made surprise appearances in the modern series.

This time also saw the debut of classic series mainstay Alistair Gordon Lethbridge-Stewart (or the Brigadier), when he met the Doctor in the tunnels of the London Underground.

The Second Doctor’s time came to an end when the TARDIS landed in the middle of a war-zone, created by a race of alien warlords who, with the help of another renegade Time Lord the War Chief, progressively kidnapped and brainwashed humans into becoming soldiers for them.

While he was able to defeat the plot, The Doctor’s punishment came in a forced regeneration from the Time Lords for breaking the laws of non-interference, and he was also sentenced to exile on the 20th Century Earth.

FIRST EVER MULTI-DOCTOR CROSSOVER WITH JON PERTWEE

Jon Pertwee was the next big name to take over as the Doctor in 1970 and most prominently travelled with explorer Jo Grant (Katy Manning) as they explored all of time and space.

His era on the show also provided fans with the first ever multi-Doctor crossover, as the Third Doctor met his two previous selves.

The epic time-travelling extravaganza also became William Hartnell’s last time portraying the First Doctor before his death in April 1975.

It also saw the introduction of prehistoric villains The Silurians and The Autons, who appeared in the first episode of the 2005 reboot series.

Eventually Jon’s Doctor regenerated following a nasty encounter with The Green Death, with his old suited persona transforming into perhaps the classic era’s most famous incarnation.

TOM BAKER’S LOVE OF JELLY BABIES

Tom Baker was both the longest-serving Classic era Doctor as well as arguably its most iconic, becoming best known for his love of jelly babies.

His partnership with Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen) won over fans and she went on to become one of the show’s most legendary companions, even getting her own spin-off after the modern revival, until her death in 2011.

Tom, known for his mass of curled hair and legendary striped scarf, brought his own flair to the role and became well-known for offering villains jelly babies at the worst possible moment.

His love of the sweets is arguably what his character became best known for, but he also went on seven years of epic adventures during his stint on the show.

The Doctor finally came across Time lord villain The Master, who went on to become a staple as recognisable as the Daleks and Cyberman both in the classic series and the modern revival.

After accidentally leaving Sarah Jane Smith in Scotland, the Doctor also goes travelling alone for the first time, and fans also see the Daleks creator Davros in an episode considered one of the series’ best ever.

Tom’s incarnation of the Doctor has gone down in history as one of the most beloved among fans, and the actor, now 89, has returned to the modern revival a number of times in homage to his classic era self.

FIRST MAJOR DEATH IN DOCTOR WHO

Peter Davison had a lot to live up to when he took over as the Fifth Doctor in 1982, and though fan interest in the franchise began to dwindle, his stint in the TARDIS is still well-loved.

His stint in the TARDIS also played host to one of the first major death’s in Doctor Who to date, when Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) died trying to stop the Cybermen’s space freighter from crashing into prehistoric Earth.

The following serial Time-Flight saw the Doctor coldly move on from Adric’s devastating sacrifice, which caused tension with his fellow TARDIS companion Tegan (Janet Fielding).

The era was also rife with Gallifrey political conflict, and he even met three of his previous incarnations after they were summoned to the planet by President Borusa, who was attempting to gain Rassilon’s secret of immortality.

The Fifth Doctor’s departure from the show came when he and his final partner Peri Brown (Nicola Bryant) were exposed to the drug spectrox in its deadly toxic raw form on Androzani Minor.

With only one dose of the antidote available, he nobly sacrificed his own existence to save Peri, expressing doubt for the first time that regeneration might be possible, before then successfully transforming into the Sixth Doctor.

Less popular: Peter Davison had a lot to live up to when he took over as the Fifth Doctor in 1982, and though fan interest in the franchise began to dwindle, his stint in the TARDIS is still well-loved

Sad: His stint in the TARDIS also played host to one of the first major death’s in Doctor Who to date, when Adric (Matthew Waterhouse) died trying to stop the Cybermen’s space freighter from crashing into prehistoric Earth

COLIN BAKER’S TURBULENT STINT

Colin Baker entered the scene as the Sixth Doctor in 1984, but he only lasted a mere two years in the role as popularity for the sci-fi franchise dwindled further.

His stint as the sharp-tongued Doctor was a turbulent period, with the actor’s early dismissal as ratings plummeted leading a slightly awkward regeneration scene.

The Fifth Doctor’s companion Peri continued in the role but complications from the Time Lord’s regeneration saw him attempt to strangle her as he struggled from mood swings and violent delusions.

After their rocky start, Peri and the Sixth Doctor went on to continue travelling together and faced numerous old villains including the Master, Daleks, Cybermen and Sontarans.

Following their adventures, Peri’s exit from the show was not played out on-screen, though she was believed to have been killed after being cruelly used as a test subject in brain transplant experiments.

However, in reality she was in fact alive, but after the Doctor was put on trial yet again the Time Lords, events left his timelines tangled slightly, as he and Peri did not reunite.

Colin bid farewell to the sci-fi franchise two years later when the TARDIS was attacked by villainous Time Lady scientist The Rani, leaving him injured and seeing him regenerate once again.

Mixed reviews: Colin Baker entered the scene as the Sixth Doctor in 1984, but he only lasted a mere two years in the role as popularity for the sci-fi franchise dwindled further

THE ARRIVAL OF BONNIE LANGFORD

The final actor who portrayed the Doctor in the original sci-fi series before its cancellation in 1989 was Sylvester McCoy but Bonnie Langford brought new life to the series as the Time Lord’s assistant.

Though popularity for the show was trailing off, Bonnie and Slyvester’s era in the TARDIS is still well-remembered as now-EastEnders star Bonnie took on the role of dizzy companion Mel Bush.

The Doctor – still his ever whimsical self – also crossed paths with the ruthless heroine Ace (Sophie Aldred), taking her under his wing and teaching her about the universe.

Ace made a return to the modern revival of the show last year alongside former assistant Tegan, as the BBC franchise paid homage to the classic series.

Sylvester’s short-than-most tenure in the TARDIS came to an abrupt end when BBC axed the show in 1989. His regeneration didn’t directly play out on-screen, but it was later shown in a TV movie revival.

DOCTOR WHO’S UNSUCCESSFUL TV REVIVAL

After a near-decade off-screen Doctor Who was brought back as a TV movie in an American co-production in 1996, with Paul McGann – a member of the McGann acting family – taking on the leading role.

The unsuccessful revival opened with Sylvester’s regeneration in a hospital morgue as his new face was finally revealed many years later, though the movie was set just hours after the 1989 scenes.

This film saw The Master (played by Eric Roberts) trying to steal the Doctor’s remaining lives by opening the Eye of Harmony the TARDIS, which nearly destroyed the Earth.

Luckily, the Doctor and his companion Dr Grace Holloway (Daphne Ashbrook) prevent the Earth’s destruction, leading the Master is sucked into the Eye.

The film showed for the first time what a romance between the Doctor and his companion could look like, as they share a firework-lit kiss in the closing scenes which infuriated fans at the time.

Not a hit: After a near-decade off-screen Doctor Who was brought back as a TV movie in an American co-production in 1996, with Paul McGann – a member of the McGann acting family – taking on the leading role

DOCTOR WHO RETURNS AS A HIT SERIES

Doctor Who finally returned to the BBC in March 2005, though fans were initially very skeptical about whether the revival would be successful after so long off-air.

Fans’ concern grew when it was announced that pop star Billie Piper had been cast as Christopher Eccleston’s companion Rose Tyler.

But the series proved all expectations wrong as the show became an instant hit when it came to screens in the debut episode, titled Rose.

Christopher quickly became beloved for his light-hearted, leather jacket-wearing version of the Time Lord, with the esteemed actor using his native Northern accent for the role because ‘lots of planets have a North’.

A major change when compared with the original classic series was that the Doctor’s planet Gallifrey had been destroyed off-screen during a Time War with the Daleks.

But the notorious villains still took centre stage in the revival, with a new scary gold exterior, with much of the storylines focusing in on The Doctor’s battles with the Daleks.

An explosive finale to the first series saw thousands of the alien robots try to conquer a futuristic version of Earth under the leadership of their Emperor.

As well as a new Doctor and a new companion, Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) also made his first appearance in the show, before becoming a recurring character over the next few series.

Russell T Davies was the writer behind the revival series of Doctor Who, while fans were also introduced to Steven Moffat – who wrote the now-iconic episode The Empty Child, which was also Captain’s Jack debut.

Despite its huge success, Christopher’s tenure in the TARDIS was brief and lasted just one series, though it paved the way for the massive success in the years to come.

He’s back! Christopher Eccleston played the Ninth Doctor when Doctor Who was revived in 2005, taking on the role one series alongside Billie Piper’s companion Rose Tyler

New look: The Daleks took centre stage in this new series with a scary gold exterior, and an explosive finale saw thousands of the aliens robots try to conquer a futuristic version of Earth under the leadership of their Emperor

Emotional: Sadly Eccleston’s tenure in the TARDIS was brief – largely due to reports of disagreements behind the scenes – but his regeneration proved epic, kissing Rose to absorb the TARDIS vortex and save her life

THAT DEVASTATING BEACH GOODBYE

David Tennant took over from Christopher Eccleston and became the Tenth Doctor, and has since gone on to become one of fans’ favourite Doctors of all time.

His romantic storyline with Rose Tyler (Billie) won over fans’ hearts as they rooted for the Time Traveller to find love with his companion, and avidly followed the pair’s adventures.

However, their romance came to a devastating end in series two, which saw Rose become trapped in a parallel world as she tried to help the Doctor defeat the Daleks and the Cybermen once more.

Becoming stranded in the parallel universe and sealed away from her one true love, Rose then has a dream that the Doctor is calling to her and heads out on a voyage to find him.

In a now-iconic scene, Rose then speaks to the Doctor through a holographic message as she stands on a remote beach and finally admits that she loves him.

But in the devastating scenes, the Doctor’s message is cut off as the gaps between the universe close, leaving him unable to tell her he loves her back.

The scene has since become a fan favourite and has gone down in history with Doctor Who fans, who were left devastated at Rose’s exit from the sci-fi franchise.

The Doctor went on to team up with up Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) after a difficult period getting over the loss of Rose, but her character has briefly returned to the series in one-off special appearances.

CATHERINE TATE JOINS THE FRANCHISE

Catherine Tate divided fans when it was first announced that she would be joining Doctor Who due to her comedy background, however she went on to become a fan favourite companion.

She first featured in a guest appearance in the 2006 Christmas Special that sent the show sky-high in terms of TV ratings and general fan appeal, and later returned as a permanent assistant.

Her performance was lauded thanks to her hilarious banter with The Doctor – or Spaceman as she liked to call him – culminating in the 2008 finale which saw many to Ten’s former companions return to fight the Daleks and Davros.

The episode came to a sad end when The Doctor parted ways with all of his companions – including Rose who found happiness with a human/Time Lord hybrid version of him – setting the stage for David’s departure the following year.

But Catherine’s stint as Donna was much beloved by fans and she is due to return alongside David for the hotly-anticipated 60th anniversary special.

DAVID TENNANT’S EXIT… AND MATT SMITH’S DEBUT

Viewers were left completely devastated when David stepped down as the Doctor and Matt Smith took over in 2010, with fans left unconvinced about his casting.

Becoming the youngest ever Doctor at 27, fans were adamant that Matt Smith would fail to fill the large shoes left behind by David.

However, Matt’s charisma made sure to win over fans and within ten minutes of the ‘Raggedy Doctor’ tucking into fish fingers and custard with a young Amelia Pond, the Eleventh Doctor charmed viewers.

Matt was recognisable for his signature bow tie and teamed up with the adult Amelia Pond, played by Karen Gillan, in The Eleventh Hour, while Amy’s fiance Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) also joined the time-travelling team.

Stephen Moffatt also took over as showrunner and brought back several aliens that made fleeting appearance during David’s tenure, including the terrifying Weeping Angels, which saw Amy and Rory torn away from the Doctor forever.

Matt’s tenure also saw a whole host of complicated storylines launched, including the ongoing mystery surrounding River Song’s true identity, which spanned across series as they delved deeper into the implications of time travel.

After River Song’s identity was revealed, a new mystery slowly unfurled involving the Doctor’s newest companion Clara Oswald – played by now-Victoria star Jenna Coleman – who the Time Lord met many incarnations of throughout time.

Despite early doubts, fans were distraught when Matt confirmed he would be leaving the role of The Doctor in a Christmas Special just a month after the 50th Anniversary.

JOHN HURT’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY APPEARANCE

Doctor Who marked the 50th anniversary since its 1963 launch in 2013, and a feature-length special came to screens in celebration.

The special episode was broadcast in upwards of 80 countries and saw Matt meet David’s version of the Doctor, while they were also joined by another version of the Time Lord, played by John Hurt.

He made his debut in the series final finale just months before, surprising fans as it was revealed that there had been another version of the Doctor never mentioned by his other incarnations, said to come between the faces of Eight and Nine.

Viewers then saw how the Doctor was responsible for the end of his native Gallifrey, which was destroyed in a war in off-screen scenes, by setting off a device called The Moment that sealed the Time War away from the rest of the universe.

The complicated storyline saw the three faces of the Doctor come together in an epic adventure crossover, while Billie Piper also reprised her role as Rose Tyler/Bad Wolf.

Tom Baker also made a surprise cameo as the Curator as a whole host of stars reunited for the 50th anniversary special, which concluded with all 13 Doctors team up to transport Gallifrey into a hidden dimension safe from Dalek harm, setting up even more new storylines.

SHOW HEADS BACK TO ITS CLASSIC ROOTS WITH PETER CAPALDI

Peter Capaldi entered as a much-different version of the Doctor when compared to his whimsical predecessors David and Matt.

The Scottish actor transformed the show back to its classic routes as the dynamic between the Doctor and his companion Clara (Jenna) was similar to the original franchise.

After Clara’s close relationship with Matt, any talks of a romance were quashed when Peter took over as the Time Lord and their storylines focused more on their thrilling adventures than their personal relationship.

The sinister character Missy – played by Michelle Gomez – took centre stage up until the big reveal that she was in fact called the Mistress, a regenerated version of iconic Who villain The Master.

Heartbreaking scenes also saw Jenna bid farewell to the franchise as her character Clara was killed by the sister Raven in devastating scenes, though her death was undone later as she went on endless journeys rather than facing her death.

Peter also teamed up with Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts, the show’s first ever gay companion, while Matt Lucas also featured as Nardole.

Peter’s incarnation of the Doctor was then forced to regenerate, paving the way for the first ever female Doctor to take centre stage.

THE FIRST EVER FEMALE DOCTOR

Jodie Whittaker became the first ever woman to play the Doctor when she took over the iconic role in 2018 after being cast by showrunner Chris Chibnall.

The actress made a brief debut at the end of the 2017 Christmas Special when Peter regenerated, before taking on the role permanently the following year in The Woman Who Fell to Earth.

During the episode, Jodie teamed up with Yasmin Khan (Mandip Gill), Ryan Sinclair (Tosin Cole) and his step-grandfather Graham O’Brien (Bradley Walsh) amid an alien invasion in Sheffield.

In a twist away from previous series, Jodie time travelled with three assistants in the TARDIS as the team headed off on a series of nail-biting adventures, coming face-to-face with enemies new and old.

Actors Tosin and Bradley both later left their roles as assistants but Mandip remained on the show as Yaz until Jodie’s departure from the show.

Jodie portrayed the Doctor for four years, until she bowed out from the role last October, paving the way for David’s hotly-anticipated return in the 60th anniversary special.

In her final ever episode The Power Of The Doctor, fans were left devastated when Yaz and the Doctor went their separate ways, after a potential love story had been teased between the pair.

A whole host of familiar faces also returned for Jodie’s epic finale, including former Doctors Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Paul McGann, David Bradley – portraying William Hartnell’s First Doctor – and Sylvester McCoy.

Fans were also rewarded with not one but who companions from the original series as Ace (Sophie Aldred) and Tegan (Janet Fielding) turned up to save the world.

And David Tennant made his grand return as the Doctor at the end of the episode, lining up the storyline for the 60th anniversary special ahead of Ncuti Gatwa taking over the role.
