House of the Dragon official trailer

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Stranger Things: The First Shadow have proven the enduring popularity of spin-off stage plays based on Film and TV franchises. So it’s no surprise then that a Game of Thrones theatrical production has been in the works for the last few years.

According to author George RR Martin, originally the show was going to be called Harrenhal as this prequel to the hit HBO TV series focuses on the Tourney at Harrenhal.

This was the jousting tournament in which Prince Rhaegar Targaryen was the champion. He chose Lyanna Stark as the new queen of love and beauty by giving her a crown of blue winter roses.

This was considered scandalous by the Houses of Westeros given that the heir to the Iron Throne was already married to Elia of Dorne, while Lyanna (who he would later marry secretly and have Jon Snow with) was betrothed to Robert Baratheon.

After the tourney, Rhaegar abducted Lyanna leading to Robert’s Rebellion, the unthroning of the Mad King and the start of A Song of Ice and Fire.

Martin has previously teased on his blog that he’s “very excited” about the Game of Thrones stage play, that he’s been working on with a team of Broadway veterans.

He also teased earlier this year that they may be able to bring the show to the West End, much like how the Stranger Things play opened for previews this November ahead of any potential Broadway transfer.

Now in his latest blog post, the 75-year-old has confirmed the title of the prequel play and when it’s likely to open, but not exactly where.
