James Gracey, a 20-year-old student at the University of Alabama, was reported missing after a night out in Barcelona. He was last seen at Shoko, a beachfront nightclub, around 3 a.m. on March 17. Tragically, his body was later discovered in the waters off Somorrostro beach.
Prior to the recovery of his body, Gracey’s wallet was found floating in the water, raising concerns among friends and family. Authorities have since ruled out foul play in the incident, indicating that there were no signs of violence or struggle.
Gracey was visiting friends studying abroad in Spain during spring break when he went missing. His family expressed their heartbreak in a statement, saying, “Our family is heartbroken as we confirm that Jimmy’s body has been recovered in Barcelona.” They noted that it was completely out of character for him not to check in with family and friends.
The University of Alabama also released a statement, saying, “Jimmy’s loss is deeply felt across our campus.” The university extended its condolences to Gracey’s family during this difficult time.
In addition, Mike Mayer, CEO of Theta Chi Fraternity, expressed his condolences, stating, “The prayers of the brotherhood of Theta Chi are with Jimmy and all who love him.” Gracey was a junior at the University of Alabama and a graduate of Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago.
As the investigation continues, the U.S. State Department has been alerted regarding the situation. Gracey’s family is working with authorities to gather more information.
A Memorial Mass is planned for Gracey at St. Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory.
