Brazil secures knockout stage spot
Brazil has advanced to the knockout stages of the World Cup following a 3-0 victory over Scotland in their final Group C match. The win, which took place at Miami Stadium in front of 64,478 fans, saw Brazil secure the top spot in their group with seven points. Morocco finished second in the group after a 4-2 win against Haiti.
The match featured a return to action for Neymar, who made his first appearance for Brazil in three years. Vinicius Junior was a key player in the victory, scoring twice for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.
Vinicius Junior’s strong performance
Vinicius Junior opened the scoring for Brazil early in the match. The first goal came after Scott McKenna failed to clear the ball, allowing Rayan to intercept and pass to an unmarked Vinicius Junior. The Real Madrid forward then took one touch to move the ball past Angus Gunn and tap it into the net, igniting celebrations among the fans.
An earlier attempt by Vinicius Junior to make it 2-0 was overturned after a VAR check, with the referee ruling a foul by the Brazilian player. Despite this, Brazil maintained an aggressive approach, consistently winning the ball back throughout the first half. Scotland, in contrast, struggled to convert set-piece opportunities and ended the first half without any shots on target.
Vinicius Junior scored his second goal just before halftime. Brazil again won the ball high up the pitch, and Bruno Guimaraes delivered a cross to the far post, which Vinicius Junior headed home. This goal proved to be a significant blow to Scotland’s hopes.
Vinicius Junior has now scored in every game of the tournament, bringing his total to four goals. This places him among elite company, level with Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, and just one goal behind Lionel Messi.

Second-half action and Neymar’s return
In the second half, Brazil continued to press for another goal, which came through a midfield move. Bruno Guimaraes, who had a strong performance and secured his second assist of the match, advanced into the box before setting up Matheus Cunha. Cunha scored his third goal of the tournament, extending Brazil’s lead to 3-0.
The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for Neymar, who entered the game as a substitute. This marked his first appearance for Brazil since October 2023. Scotland had limited attacking opportunities throughout the match, with Alisson making a crucial save in the final minutes to deny them a consolation goal, ensuring Brazil kept a clean sheet.
Scotland’s manager, Stephen Clark, had anticipated Brazil’s attacking strategy from the outset. Despite the loss, Scotland’s chances of reaching the knockout stages are not entirely over, as they could still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. One projection gives them a 55 percent chance of advancing, even with a -3 goal difference.
Brazil is now set to face the runners-up from Group F in the round-of-32, with Japan currently projected to be their opponent. Morocco will play against the winners of Group F, most likely the Netherlands.
