Damon Stoudamire Fired as Georgia Tech Men’s Basketball Coach

Damon Stoudamire has been fired as the men’s basketball coach at Georgia Tech after three seasons, the university announced on March 8, 2026. Stoudamire’s tenure concluded with a disappointing overall record of 42-55, including a troubling 19-39 in Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) play.

This season, Georgia Tech finished last in the ACC with a record of just 2-16. The team struggled significantly, culminating in a 12-game losing streak that marked the end of Stoudamire’s time with the program.

Stoudamire, who previously served as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics, was hired with hopes of revitalizing Georgia Tech’s basketball program. His first season included a notable upset of No. 7 Duke, finishing with a record of 14-18. The following year saw some improvement, as the team went 17-17 and received a bid to the NIT.

Despite these early successes, the program has struggled to maintain competitiveness, with Georgia Tech making only one NCAA Tournament appearance since 2010. The decision to part ways with Stoudamire was made by Ryan Alpert, the first-year athletic director at Georgia Tech, who stated, “On behalf of Georgia Tech, I want to thank Damon for his commitment to the Institute, our men’s basketball program and, most importantly, our student-athletes.”

Alpert emphasized the importance of Georgia Tech men’s basketball within the athletics department and the community, stating, “Georgia Tech men’s basketball has a proud history and is an important part of our athletics department and community.” He also expressed a commitment to finding a coach who can build a championship-level program.

Stoudamire’s contract was set to run through the 2027-28 season, and Georgia Tech will owe him just under $3 million following his dismissal. His firing marks a significant shift for a program that has faced challenges in recent years.

As the search for a new head coach begins, the focus will be on revitalizing a team that has struggled to find consistent success in the ACC. The upcoming decisions will be crucial for the future of Georgia Tech basketball.
