Dylan Mingo, a 5-star guard and one of the top prospects in high school basketball, has officially decommitted from North Carolina. This decision follows his initial commitment to the Tar Heels on February 17, 2023, and comes in the wake of significant changes within the program.

Mingo, a 6-foot-5 point guard from Long Island Lutheran High School in New York, was previously ranked No. 9 in the SC Next 100. His impressive performance on the Nike EYBL circuit included an average of 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 2.3 steals per game over 12 regular-season games. Additionally, he was named MVP of the NBA Top 100 camp, where he averaged 23.8 points, 6.8 assists, and 6.5 rebounds.

The decision to decommit is particularly notable as it follows the dismissal of Hubert Davis, who was instrumental in Mingo’s initial commitment. Mingo did not sign a letter of intent to join UNC, leaving his future open to other opportunities. His recruitment process now includes considerations from schools such as Baylor, Penn State, and Washington.

Adding to the family dynamics, Mingo’s brother, Kayden Mingo, is currently in the transfer portal after leaving Penn State, which could influence Dylan’s next steps.

Mingo expressed his commitment to impacting winning in every aspect of his game, stating, “I feel like from Day 1, my role will be a player who impacts winning in every aspect.” He also emphasized his dedication to winning a national championship, saying, “Honestly, I am just a person who will give it his all to win a national championship.”

As of now, Maximo Adams is the only true freshman expected to join UNC’s basketball program, making Mingo’s departure a significant change for the team’s future. Details remain unconfirmed regarding Mingo’s next destination, but further developments in his recruitment are anticipated as the basketball season approaches.
