LeBron James joins the 76ers

The Philadelphia 76ers have officially signed LeBron James, a move that has generated considerable discussion within the NBA. The signing was confirmed on a Sunday, marking a busy period for the league in late July. This decision by James follows the recent trade involving Jaylen Brown, further reshaping the 76ers’ roster.

James’s decision to join Philadelphia is described by some as a surprising choice, particularly given his age. At 41 years old, James has indicated that this will be the final move of his career. The addition of James to a roster that already includes players like Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and Joel Embiid creates a new dynamic for the team.

Adam Pantozzi/NBAE via Getty Images Credit: theringer.com

Impact on the team and Eastern Conference

The 76ers are now seen as a team with the potential to contend at the top of the Eastern Conference. The combination of personalities and play styles on the team is considered intriguing. Some observers believe that James’s presence could act as a unifying force, helping to integrate the team’s high-level scoring talent.

The fit between James and the existing perimeter talent, including Maxey and VJ Edgecombe, along with new additions like Brown and Anfernee Simons, is anticipated to be harmonious. This arrangement is expected to reduce the burden on James, allowing him to operate effectively as a playmaker. The team also features Joel Embiid, a recent MVP, who is seen as a key component of the roster.

Despite the talent, questions remain about how the team will manage chemistry and tactical adjustments. The 76ers’ roster is significantly different from previous seasons, with multiple seasoned players now part of the lineup. The team’s ability to blend these individual talents and maintain the health of key players like Embiid and James throughout the season will be crucial.

Future outlook and potential matchups

The signing of James has led to speculation about the 76ers’ prospects in a seven-game series against teams like the Knicks. Some believe that if the 76ers can maintain full health, they would be a formidable opponent, especially given the offensive capabilities of Maxey, Edgecombe, Brown, and James, coupled with Embiid’s presence in the paint.

However, other perspectives suggest that the Knicks, who recently won a championship and swept Philadelphia in a previous series, might still hold an advantage. Concerns about Embiid’s ability to play a full season and perform consistently in the later stages of the playoffs are noted. The absence of a reliable backup center with sufficient lateral mobility is also highlighted as a potential vulnerability for the 76ers.

The Knicks’ established cohesion and shared experience from previous seasons are seen by some as factors that could give them an edge over the newly formed 76ers roster. While the 76ers are considered more talented by some, the memory of past playoff performances against the Knicks remains a factor in these assessments. The 76ers’ new composition will face challenges in achieving a similar level of team unity in their first year together.

Other free agency and trade activities also occurred around the same time as James’s signing. Cleveland reached an agreement to sign Mario Hezonja from Real Madrid, and Denver matched an offer sheet from Oklahoma City for restricted free agent Spencer Jones.

Boston makes early trade deadline move

The Red Sox have acquired infielder Curtis Mead from the Nationals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Connelly Early. This move comes as the trade deadline approaches, with teams beginning to make adjustments to their rosters. The Red Sox sought a right-handed bat with power, while the Nationals aimed to bolster their pitching.

Connelly Early, a left-handed pitcher, is currently on the injured list due to elbow inflammation. He had a record of 8-7 with a 3.24 ERA in 21 regular-season starts for Boston. Catcher Carlos Narváez recalled Early’s big league debut in September 2025, where he recorded 11 strikeouts in five scoreless innings against the Athletics. This performance initiated a five-start stretch for Early late in the 2025 season, which included a start in Game 3 of the AL Wild Card Series at Yankee Stadium. Narváez described Early’s pitching as “electric stuff,” noting his ability to throw at 96 mph, occasionally touching 97 mph, with impressive spin.

The trade was confirmed on social media, though some players, like left-hander Payton Tolle, initially believed the news to be artificial intelligence. Tolle, who had grown close with Early during their time in the minor leagues and in the big leagues, described the news as bittersweet. He expressed that the trade signals the front office’s willingness to make significant moves to improve the team, especially after a recent turnaround in performance. Tolle also spoke with Early shortly after the news broke, wishing him well.

Mead’s impact and team adjustments

Curtis Mead, a right-handed infielder, is in the midst of a breakout season. In 87 games, he has recorded 17 home runs, 48 RBIs, and an OPS of .852. While he primarily played third base for Washington, Mead has experience at all four infield positions in the big leagues. His acquisition is intended to address gaps in run scoring and add a power bat to the Red Sox lineup.

Interim manager Chad Tracy indicated that the current plan is to keep Caleb Durbin at third base and utilize Mead primarily at second base. Durbin, who ranks third among American League third basemen in Outs Above Average, has been in communication with Tracy and expressed his willingness to play wherever needed. Durbin noted that players anticipated a move due to the team’s position to add talent and praised the communication from the team regarding his role.

The trade also reflects confidence in left-handed starter Jake Bennett, who was acquired by the Red Sox in December in another deal with the Nationals. Bennett has established himself as a key player, holding a 2.58 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP in 10 starts. Like Early and Tolle, Bennett has five full seasons of team control remaining. Bennett acknowledged the difficulty of seeing a teammate go but recognized the opportunity it presents for Early.

The addition of Mead is seen as a strong indicator of the Red Sox’s current standing and their commitment to improving the team. Narváez highlighted the positive energy and chemistry within the team, stating that they are ready to welcome Mead. The trade deadline is set for next Monday.

Other early trade deadline activity

Beyond the Red Sox and Nationals deal, other teams have also started making moves as the trade deadline approaches. The Pirates sent right-handed pitcher José Urquidy to the White Sox for right-handed pitcher Felix Doroteo. Doroteo, at 21 years old, has 18 innings of experience in the Arizona Complex League. Urquidy, who was once an unheralded prospect, had recently been designated for assignment by Pittsburgh.

Additional minor transactions include the Royals trading outfielder Kameron Misner to the Phillies for cash, and the Athletics acquiring right-handed pitcher Scott Blewett from the Cardinals, also for cash. These early trades, while not considered blockbusters, mark the beginning of activity leading up to the trade deadline.

In other news, Lance McCullers Jr. was designated for assignment, a notable event given that Milwaukee had traded for him on July 15. This move meant that Jadyn Fielder, who was traded for McCullers Jr., was exchanged for 4 2/3 innings of relief pitching.

Injuries have also impacted potential trade deadline plans for several teams. Cody Bellinger of the Yankees sustained a left hamstring strain, adding to the team’s missing power hitters, which include Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge. Bellinger had been a strong offensive and defensive contributor for the Yankees. Juan Soto of the Mets suffered a left calf strain, which, while not affecting trade plans for the last-place team, represents a significant loss of star power. Shea Langeliers of the Athletics sustained a torn meniscus, taking him off the list of potentially available catchers at the trade deadline. Another injury update includes Addison Barger of the Blue Jays, who will miss the remainder of the season after elbow surgery, having not played since May 9.

The Red Sox, with a record of 54-50, secured two wins against the Blue Jays, who are at 48-58. The Blue Jays’ only win in that series came from Dylan Cease’s one-hitter on Saturday.

Stephen Curry’s Future with Golden State

Discussions are emerging regarding the future of Stephen Curry with the Golden State Warriors. Reports suggest a potential divergence in vision between Curry and the team’s ownership. One report indicates that Curry might be growing weary of the team’s strategy of pursuing star players. Another report suggests that Warriors owner Joe Lacob is focused on building the team’s future both with and after Curry’s tenure.

These discussions do not suggest that Curry intends to leave Golden State, nor do they indicate the team’s desire to trade him. However, they highlight a possible shift in the team’s foundation during the Curry era. It is suggested that Curry might not be entirely content with the current direction of the team, while ownership appears to be looking beyond his final years with the franchise.

Curry could potentially play out his current contract with Golden State, and then consider signing short-term deals to experience playing for other teams. There is also speculation that he might consider returning to Charlotte, his childhood home, or even joining a team like San Antonio to play alongside Victor Wembanyama. Another possibility is that he might seek to pursue an additional championship, similar to LeBron James.

Trade Scenarios and Team Dynamics

The possibility of a trade involving Stephen Curry has led to various scenarios. One suggested trade package for Curry includes Paul George, along with picks acquired from Philadelphia, and Sam Hauser. This proposed deal would require waiting until September 6 due to salary aggregation rules concerning Paul George.

For such a trade to be viable, certain young Celtics players, such as Baylor Scheierman, Hugo Gonzalez, or Jordan Walsh, would need to be prepared to take on significant roles on the wing. While George is not expected to play extensively, his contributions, combined with Curry’s, would need to be offset by the production of these younger players.

The Charlotte Hornets are also mentioned as a team that might consider acquiring Curry, given his local ties to Charlotte. The idea of “Bringing Steph Home” has been a recurring theme among Hornets fans. The Hornets are seen as a team with assets that could potentially be used to acquire a star player, even one at Curry’s age.

Orlando Magic v Charlotte Hornets Credit: sbnation.com

From the Warriors’ perspective, trading Curry could provide draft picks and avoid taking on additional salary, especially with the Hornets reportedly having a substantial trade exception. However, such a move could also be a public relations challenge, as fans might prioritize immediate success over future draft capital. The return in terms of assets would need to be significant to justify the potential impact on the team’s image.

For the Hornets, acquiring Curry could align with their team’s playing style, which emphasizes three-point shooting and rebounding. A lineup featuring Curry alongside players like Kon Knueppel, Brandon Miller, Naz Reid, and Hannes Steinbach could create a formidable offensive unit. Additionally, bringing Curry to Charlotte could significantly enhance the team’s public perception, especially after recent roster changes.

However, questions remain about what the Hornets could realistically achieve in the Eastern Conference by adding Curry, and whether it would be worth sacrificing future draft capital. The team’s current strategy involves building around its draft assets, and acquiring Curry could alter the leadership structure, as he would likely become the team’s central figure.

Ultimately, a trade involving Stephen Curry would represent a significant shift for the Warriors, given the long history and bond between Curry and the organization. The most prudent approach for the Warriors might be to observe the initial part of the season and assess potential trade opportunities closer to the trade deadline.

By Tyler Brooks — 27 July 2026 — 3 min read

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was absent from Monday’s practice following a shooting incident at his Ashburn, Virginia, home on Sunday evening. His wife, Mia Bieniemy, was shot and transported to a hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition.

Authorities in Virginia confirmed that Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the 27-year-old son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy, was arrested early Monday in connection with the shooting. He faces charges including malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. Elijah Zion Bieniemy is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid addressed the situation after Monday’s training camp practice, expressing support for the Bieniemy family. “Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family, our thoughts and prayers are with them,” Reid stated. He emphasized that Mia Bieniemy was stable, which he considered a positive development.

Team Support and Coaching Adjustments

Reid highlighted the strong support system available to Eric Bieniemy and his family within the Chiefs organization. “He has a great support group here, as does his family, as needed,” Reid said, adding, “We’ll just let time take care of it from there.” He also spoke highly of Mia Bieniemy, referring to her as “a saint” and “one of God’s good blessings.”

Eric Bieniemy was not present for Monday’s workout, which included rookies, quarterbacks, and a few veterans. There is no specified timetable for his return to the team. Reid noted the importance of Bieniemy attending to personal matters, stating, “On these things, real life, you take care of that, and that becomes important.”

In Bieniemy’s absence, Reid indicated that other coaches would step up to manage his responsibilities during training camp. Joe Bleymaier, the pass-game coordinator, and Andy Heck, the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator, will take over his duties. Reid reiterated that the most important thing is for Bieniemy to have the opportunity to spend time with his family and handle the situation.

Bieniemy’s Return to the Chiefs

Eric Bieniemy recently returned to the Chiefs as offensive coordinator this season, replacing Matt Nagy. He was part of Andy Reid’s initial staff in Kansas City in 2013, serving five seasons as the running backs coach before being promoted to offensive coordinator. During his previous tenure as offensive coordinator, the Chiefs reached three Super Bowls and won two, with Bieniemy contributing to one of the NFL’s top offenses.

After interviewing for several head-coaching positions without success, Bieniemy joined the Washington Commanders in 2023. Following a season with the Commanders and a subsequent season as offensive coordinator at UCLA, he spent last season as the running backs coach with the Bears before rejoining the Chiefs. Reid had previously expressed enthusiasm about Bieniemy’s return, noting his energy and leadership qualities.

The Chiefs are scheduled to welcome veterans and the remaining 90-man offseason roster into training camp on Tuesday, with a full-team practice planned for Wednesday at Missouri Western State University.

The team is off on Tuesday. The first full-squad workout at Missouri Western State University is Wednesday.

By Tyler Brooks — 27 July 2026 — 4 min read

The Major League Baseball trade season is intensifying as teams prepare for the upcoming deadline. Contenders and sellers are actively evaluating potential moves for players on 40-man rosters before the deadline hits.

This deadline is the final opportunity for clubs to trade players on their 40-man rosters. Minor leaguers not on a 40-man roster can still be traded after this date. The Commissioner’s Office now has the flexibility to set it between July 28 and August 3.

Key Trade Candidates Emerge

Several prominent players are generating significant trade buzz as the deadline nears. Among them is Tarik Skubal of the Tigers, who is considered a major name in trade discussions. He is eligible for free agency after the current season. The Tigers are reportedly exploring options, including trading Skubal for a package that could include a controllable rotation replacement and future prospects, or retaining him to pursue a postseason spot.

Mason Miller of the Padres is another player drawing attention. He entered July 27 with a 0.86 ERA and 78 strikeouts in 41 ⅔ innings this season. Miller is under club control through 2029, making him a non-rental option. The Mariners, Pirates, and Yankees have been mentioned as potential suitors if he becomes available, though recent reports suggest the Padres are likely to keep him as they remain in postseason contention.

2026 MLB Trade Deadline Buzz, Trades Tracker: Peralta Expects Mets To Trade Him Credit: foxsports.com

CJ Abrams, an All-Star shortstop for the Nationals, is also a subject of trade talks. While Washington is not actively “shopping” Abrams, they are open to listening to offers. Abrams, who is a striker, entered July 27 batting .297 with 27 home runs, 82 RBIs, 17 stolen bases, and a .940 OPS. He hit two home runs on Sunday, surpassing a previous record for Nationals shortstops. He is under club control through 2028, and the Yankees, Brewers, and Red Sox have been linked to him.

From the Angels, pitchers Reid Detmers and José Soriano, along with shortstop Zach Neto, are potential trade chips. The Angels, currently holding the worst record in the American League, are reportedly open to trading controllable players if suitable offers arise. Soriano and Detmers are under club control through 2028, and Neto through 2029.

Clay Holmes and Freddy Peralta of the Mets are also in trade discussions. Holmes has not pitched in the majors since May 15 due to a fractured right fibula, but there is a reported greater chance of him being traded than extended. Peralta, who can become a free agent after the season, has indicated he expects to be traded. He has a 4.99 ERA in 22 starts and has not completed five innings in four of his past five outings.

Foster Griffin of the Nationals is another prominent trade candidate, as he can become a free agent after the season. Griffin made the NL All-Star team after signing a one-year deal with the Nationals. Some executives reportedly anticipate Washington will trade him, though the team’s position in the wild-card race adds complexity to the decision.

Outfielder Heliot Ramos and utility infielder Casey Schmitt of the Giants have also attracted trade interest. Both players are under club control beyond this season, which could influence their asking price.

Team Strategies and Market Dynamics

The Tigers, with a 50-56 record entering July 27, are 3.5 games behind the final AL wild-card spot. Manager A.J. Hinch has stated the team is focused on winning despite the trade speculation around Skubal. The front office faces a decision between a potentially significant return for Skubal and maintaining a postseason push.

The Rays, holding the best record in the American League at 62-43, could be active buyers. One rival executive suggested they might be the deadline’s biggest surprise buyer. The Rays have a three-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East as of July 27.

With an AL-worst 42-64 record, the Angels are approaching the deadline with an open mind, according to general manager John Mozeliak. Soriano, Detmers, and Neto are key players who could be moved, but their remaining years of club control mean the Angels would seek substantial returns.

The Mets, with a 44-62 record and in last place in the NL East on July 27, have reportedly indicated to other teams their willingness to sell. Holmes and Peralta are trending towards being traded, with Peralta acknowledging his expectation to be dealt.

The Nationals, at 54-52 and only one game behind Arizona for the final NL wild-card spot, face a complex decision regarding Abrams and Griffin. While not actively shopping Abrams, they are listening to offers. Griffin’s expiring contract makes him a more conventional trade candidate, but the team’s unexpected contention could complicate a move.

One completed deal saw the Rockies send right-hander Seth Halvorsen to the Dodgers in exchange for right-handed pitcher Nick Frasso and outfielder Landyn Vidourek.

New ‘Nickel City’ Uniforms Unveiled

The Buffalo Bills have introduced their new “Nickel City” alternate uniforms, which include an all-gray pant and jersey combination. This new uniform set also features “The Charge” helmet, characterized by an all-blue base accented with the team’s iconic red charge. The design is intended to honor the strength, grit, and authenticity associated with the people of Western New York throughout history.

The “Nickel City” theme draws inspiration from the Buffalo Nickel, with the all-gray design reflecting this historical reference. When creating alternate uniforms, NFL clubs are required to use colors that are already part of their existing color palette. Aaron La Porta, the Bills’ director of design, noted that gray was a brand color they had not previously emphasized, presenting a unique design challenge.

Visual elements for the uniform were inspired by the region’s steel mills, grain elevators, and rail yards, which are significant to Buffalo’s historical development. The uniforms also serve as a tribute to the blue-collar workers who contributed to the construction of the team’s new home, Highmark Stadium.

Design Details and Inspiration

A prominent feature of the new uniform is the royal blue “Charge” helmet. This design brings the Charging Buffalo emblem to life, with its signature horn, eye, and charge streak prominently displayed on a royal blue shell. The helmet incorporates a metallic flake finish and additional metallic blue flake accents, aiming to convey a sense of energy, strength, and attack.

La Porta described the new helmet as a bold representation for what he termed a “bold new era” in Buffalo Bills football. The design process for these alternate uniforms spanned eight months and involved various stages, including the selection of fabric colors, helmet paint finishes, and broadcast television tests. The team is set to usher in this “Nickel City” era starting with the 2026 season.

The Bills are permitted by the NFL to wear these alternate uniforms for both home and away games. However, the team has not yet specified which particular game will mark the debut of the new uniforms. La Porta and the Bills design team previously collaborated on the “Cold Front” Rivalries jerseys, which were first introduced in 2025.

Nickel City Uniforms, May 29, 2026 at the Kaleida Health Performance Center. Credit: buffalobills.com

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Season

The introduction of the new alternate uniforms is one of several changes for the Buffalo organization. The team is also preparing for its inaugural season at the new Highmark Stadium, with construction of the facility having been completed earlier this offseason. These developments are expected to generate additional excitement for fans as the 2026 campaign approaches.

La Porta emphasized the team’s commitment to advancing the Buffalo Bills brand and connecting with a broader fan base, while simultaneously honoring the rich history and legacy of both the team and the region. The design team worked within specific guidelines regarding what could be adjusted or introduced into the brand’s uniform collection.

The new alternate uniforms were showcased in a trailer released by the Bills, where the team declared, “We are the Nickel City.” The 2026 season marks the beginning of the “Nickel City” era for the Buffalo Bills.

Shanahan’s Recovery and Training Camp Leadership

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering from a serious car accident that occurred on July 14. Despite sustaining several injuries, including a severe concussion, a broken nose, three broken ribs, and a broken hand, he is expected to be on the sideline for the team’s Week 1 opener. The coach also required 40 stitches in his face following the two-car collision.

General Manager John Lynch stated that Shanahan is doing well and is on a path to recovery, though he is experiencing lingering effects from the concussion. Lynch anticipates that Shanahan will be fully recovered well before the September 10 game against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. Shanahan will follow a concussion protocol similar to that of a player to ensure his readiness to resume his duties.

During Shanahan’s recovery, assistant head coach Chris Foerster is overseeing the bulk of the head-coaching responsibilities as the 49ers begin their training camp. Foerster is receiving support from other key staff members, including defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, and special teams coordinator Brant Boyer.

NFL training camp news live updates Jacoby Brissett gets raise from Cardinals Kyle Shanahan injured in car wreck Credit: sports.yahoo.com

Details of the Accident and Public Disclosure

The car accident involving Shanahan happened on July 14, but the news was not publicly disclosed until 11 days later, coinciding with the first day of the team’s 2026 training camp. The 49ers issued a statement regarding the accident at 12:00 p.m. ET on a Saturday, with subsequent reports from sports media outlets following shortly thereafter.

Reports indicated that the other driver involved in the accident was not injured, and law enforcement determined that alcohol or drugs were not factors in the crash. No one was cited for the incident. The effort to keep the accident quiet for an extended period has raised questions about the flow of information, particularly given that basic details about such events are often publicly available.

Some media members were aware of the situation before the official announcement. For instance, Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard hinted at upcoming news and later confirmed he knew about the accident but chose not to report it due to having limited details. This situation highlights a broader discussion within sports journalism regarding the reporting of publicly available information versus information released by teams.

Team Management and Future Outlook

With Shanahan stepping back from his typical head-coaching tasks during training camp, the collaborative effort of the coaching staff is crucial. Raheem Morris, in particular, brings prior experience as an NFL head coach, having led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons for three seasons each. This experience could be valuable in managing the team during this period.

The 49ers’ decision to manage the disclosure of Shanahan’s accident has drawn attention to the dynamics between sports organizations and the media. While the team aimed to keep the details private, the nature of public incidents often means that information becomes accessible through various channels. The focus now remains on Shanahan’s continued recovery and his anticipated return to the sideline for the Week 1 game.

The team’s general manager, John Lynch, has expressed confidence in Shanahan’s recovery timeline, stating that the expectation is for him to be fully recovered well before the September 10 game.

By Tyler Brooks — 27 July 2026 — 5 min read

Carlos Beltrán, Andruw Jones, and Jeff Kent were inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday in Cooperstown. The ceremony, held at the Clark Sports Center, drew an estimated crowd of 12,000 fans and featured 57 other Hall of Famers on stage, marking the largest assembly of current Hall of Famers to date.

Jones, a longtime Atlanta Braves outfielder, delivered a speech that highlighted his connection to his home country of Curaçao. He noted the distance from the small island to Cooperstown, emphasizing that the two locations are now “forever joined together.” Jones, a 10-time Gold Glove winner and five-time All-Star, is the first player from Curaçao to achieve Hall of Fame induction. He expressed hope that he would not be the last, pointing to players like Ozzie Albies and Kenley Jansen as part of Curaçao’s baseball legacy, which began with Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens.

A notable part of Jones’s address was his tribute to his late father, Henry Jones. He recounted how his father taught him to track flyballs by hitting them from foul pole to foul pole and to build wrist strength using a sledgehammer. Jones credited his father’s constant coaching for his success, stating, “Henry Jones was a legend in Curaçao, a great player in his own right. And I’m not standing here in Cooperstown without his constant coaching. Dad, we did it.”

Beltrán’s Emotional Induction

Before Beltrán began his speech, chants of “Puerto Rico” filled the air. The crowd continued to cheer and wave flags whenever he mentioned his home island. Beltrán, a 20-year veteran and the 1999 AL Rookie of the Year, spoke about his efforts to represent Puerto Rico throughout his career. “Everywhere I played baseball, I always tried to represent my island,” he said. “I tried to do the best I could for the organizations that I played, but also I wanted to represent Puerto Rico.”

Beltrán acknowledged each organization he played for, thanking them for the lessons they provided. He singled out the New York Mets for particular praise, explaining his choice of their cap for his plaque. “When people ask me about why I chose (the Mets) cap, I have to say this,” he stated. “Guys, it’s simple. Every organization shapes your career. New York shaped my life.”

He also shared specific examples from his career, such as witnessing teammates Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell “play with pain” during his time in Houston. Beltrán did not mention his World Series win with the Astros in 2017, a title associated with controversy due to an illegal sign-stealing scheme and his involvement. He addressed those who may have held differing views on his candidacy, thanking the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for his induction and also expressing gratitude to those who saw things differently. “If baseball has really taught me something, I want to say is that I hope in life, we continue to measure ourselves by the same standard we have used to measure others,” Beltrán remarked.

Beltrán secured his place in the Hall of Fame on his fourth attempt, receiving 84.2% of the vote from the BBWAA. Jones was inducted in his ninth year of eligibility, garnering 78.4%, surpassing the 75% threshold required for induction.

Kent’s Journey and Red Sox Presence

Jeff Kent, the 2000 NL MVP with the San Francisco Giants, was elected by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee last December after his eligibility on the BBWAA ballot concluded in 2023. Kent, known for his hard-nosed playing style, displayed a more emotional side during the induction weekend. He shared in a post-ceremony news conference that he needed tissues before speaking, having been deeply moved by seeing his parents in the crowd. “I was more emotional for the 35, 40 minutes of sitting down than I was for the speech,” Kent said, adding, “I thought I was going to be a wreck and I’m glad it was only a half a wreck.”

Kent’s speech included a story about a pivotal moment in his baseball career when his father offered him a pickup truck if he earned a college scholarship. This offer led Kent to shift his focus from motorcycle racing to school and baseball, ultimately earning him a scholarship to the University of California, Berkeley. He still owns the pickup truck, which he described as “a simple reminder that some of the simplest things can change the entire direction of your life.” Kent played for six teams over his 17-year career and holds the all-time home run record for second basemen.

The induction weekend also saw a significant presence of former Boston Red Sox players. While no Red Sox legend was inducted this year, several all-time greats with connections to the team were expected to attend. The Hall of Fame released a list of living Hall of Famers anticipated to be present, who would sit on stage behind the new inductees. Among those with a Red Sox hat on their Hall of Fame plaque expected to be there were Jim Rice, Wade Boggs, Pedro Martinez, and David Ortiz.

Additionally, other players with Red Sox ties, who did not enter the Hall of Fame with a Boston cap on their plaque, were also expected to attend. This group included Dennis Eckersley, whose plaque features an A’s hat. Andre Dawson and Adrian Beltre, both of whom played for the Red Sox during their extensive MLB careers, were also anticipated to be in Cooperstown. Jeff Bagwell, a Red Sox draft pick who achieved his Hall of Fame career primarily with the Houston Astros, was another notable figure with Red Sox connections expected to be present on Sunday.

By Tyler Brooks — 26 July 2026 — 3 min read

Steve Garcia recently shared details about a conversation he had with his son after his loss at UFC Freedom 250. The event took place on the White House grounds in Washington, D.C., and marked Garcia’s first defeat in approximately four years.

Garcia’s bout against Diego Lopes was the opening fight of the UFC Freedom 250 card. The fight concluded in the second round with Lopes securing a knockout victory via a left hook and ground and pound shots. This result ended Garcia’s seven-fight winning streak.

Post-Fight Conversation with Son

Upon returning home to his family after the event, Garcia faced a difficult moment when his young son inquired about the fight’s outcome. Garcia recounted his son asking, “Daddy, did you win?” Given Garcia’s undefeated streak over the past four years, his son had not experienced his father losing a fight.

When Garcia informed his son that he had not won, his son began to cry, a reaction Garcia described as heartbreaking. Garcia then drew a parallel to video game sessions with his son, where he often encourages him to learn from losses. He reminded his son of the advice he gives: “If you lose, what does Daddy always tell you?” His son responded, “Try again.” Garcia then told his son, “Exactly, so Daddy has to try again.”

Garcia’s previous loss in MMA occurred in June of 2022 at UFC 275, which was held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Event Day Disruptions

The UFC Freedom 250 event itself experienced some unusual disruptions. A weather delay in the vicinity of the White House caused the card’s scheduled 8 p.m. ET start time to be pushed back. Garcia described warming up as scheduled, only to be informed of a 30-minute delay due to the inclement weather.

After the weather cleared, Garcia resumed his warm-up. However, he was then quickly told that fighter walkouts were imminent, leaving him with little time to fully re-engage his pre-fight routine. He noted that he had not even broken a sweat again before being called to the cage. Garcia acknowledged that his opponent, Lopes, experienced the same delays, stating, “It is what it is. I’m not going to complain about it because Diego had to deal with the same thing I did.”

Another factor Garcia mentioned was the absence of his head coach, Greg Jackson, from the White House event. Garcia indicated that Jackson’s absence created a tactical gap that his longtime coach, Mike Winkeljohn, could not entirely fill. He highlighted that he had never lost a fight when both Jackson and Winkeljohn were in his corner.

Garcia is expected to return to sparring this week. He expressed a desire to continue competing at the top of the featherweight division after experiencing it.

The UFC Freedom 250 event was part of broader celebrations within the United States of America and featured a seven-fight card, presented as a rare Sunday night showcase for the sport’s premier promotion.

Garcia’s reflections on the fight and the subsequent conversation with his son were shared in an interview with MMA Fighting.

By Tyler Brooks — 26 July 2026 — 5 min read

Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia has secured his fifth Tour de France title, matching the record for most wins in the endurance event. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG rider crossed the finish line on Paris’ Champs-Elysees as part of the peloton, joining cycling legends Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, and Miguel Indurain in achieving this milestone. This victory marks Pogacar’s third consecutive Tour win.

The final stage of the three-week Grand Tour was won by the Netherlands’ Mathieu van der Poel of Alpecin-Premier Tech. Van der Poel’s win came after a determined charge to the line on the French capital’s cobbled streets, where he narrowly beat his teammate Jasper Philipsen of Belgium.

Shortened Final Stage and Wildfire Impact

The final stage of the Tour de France was shortened to 89km and began on the Champs-Élysées, featuring two laps of the avenue followed by circuits of the Butte Montmartre. This alteration was made due to wildfires in other parts of France. Organizers ASO, in a joint statement with the prefecture police, indicated that internal security forces were redeployed to assist with response efforts in affected areas.

Wildfires near the Arcachon lagoon and around Biscarrosse in the Landes region have destroyed over 36,000 hectares of forest. This marks the third stage of this year’s Tour to be affected by prefecture intervention due to either wildfires or a heatwave. The change in the final stage’s parcours, which includes a cobbled climb over Montmartre, was intended to encourage more powerful riders to contend for victory.

On Sunday, Van der Poel secured his win after breaking away with Pogacar with 11km remaining. The two riders led through the narrow lanes over Montmartre and past Sacre-Coeur before Pogacar began to fade. Van der Poel managed to stay ahead of a chasing pack, which included several sprinters, to claim the prestigious victory. He later described the effort, saying, “We have a saying in Dutch that it has to come for your toes. I don’t know where this came from, but not from my toes.”

Image caption,Mathieu Van der Poel and Pogacar battled over Montmartre in a thrilling finale Credit: bbc.com

Pogacar’s Dominance and Key Rivals

Pogacar’s performance throughout the race included a record-breaking ascent of Alpe d’Huez on stage 19, where he secured another dominant victory. This was one of five stage wins for Pogacar, who utilized his explosive launch and consistent pace to overcome his competitors. His career now includes 127 wins in an eight-year elite professional career, encompassing major races such as the Tour of Flanders, Giro d’Italia, Milan-San Remo, Road World Championships, Giro di Lombardia, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege.

Some fans expressed frustration with Pogacar’s consistent dominance, suggesting it diminished the sport’s competitive edge. Pogacar acknowledged the support, stating, “Victory is really special. Thank you to all the fans and my team. But the biggest thanks goes to all my family who support me all my life. My parents – without them I would not be standing here five times already.” He also expressed hope for the quick recovery of injured competitors, including Jonas Vingegaard, saying, “It’s a shame Jonas [Vingegaard] crashed out this time and many others. I hope they have a quick recovery and next year we fight again.”

Vingegaard, who won in 2022 and 2023, abandoned the race this year after breaking his collarbone on stage 15. This incident led to scrutiny of the International Testing Agency (ITA), which had conducted an anti-doping test on Vingegaard at 2am. Pogacar also underwent testing at 5am. The ITA cited “exceptional circumstances” for these rare night tests.

Pogacar’s closest rival in the general classification was Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel of Red Bull-Bora-Hansgohe, who finished six minutes 26 seconds behind. Third place went to Pogacar’s Mexican teammate Isaac del Toro, who won stage two. Pogacar also assisted Del Toro in consolidating his podium position during Saturday’s ‘queen’ stage to Alpe d’Huez. Del Toro secured the white jersey for the best young rider, ahead of France’s Paul Seixas of Decathlon-CMA CGM.

Jersey Winners and Stage Highlights

Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz of EF Education-Easypost was a notable rider, claiming the king of the mountains’ polka dot jersey. Carapaz won stage 18 and stage 20, reaching the race’s highest point first after 5,450km of climbing. He had previously won a stage in Orcières-Merlette and finished third on the Alpe d’Huez stage.

The green points jersey was awarded to Denmark’s Mads Pedersen of Lidl-Trek, who demonstrated tenacity on climbs and won stage four. He outperformed several sprinters, including Philipsen, who won stage 17, and Belgium’s Tim Merlier of Soudal-Quick Step, who won three bunch sprint stages.

Britain’s Tom Pidcock of Pinarello-Q36.5 finished ninth in the general classification. His former team, now known as Netcompany Ineos Cycling, did not record a stage victory in 21 attempts. Fellow Briton Adam Yates, 33, showed resilience after falling ill on stage 16, later assisting Pogacar on a climb during stage 19.

The final stage results saw Mathieu van der Poel (Ned/Alpecin-Premier Tech) finish in 1hr 58mins 49secs, with Jasper Philipsen (Bel/Alpecin-Premier Tech) at the same time, and Mads Pedersen (Den/Lidl-Trek) in third.

The general classification after stage 21 placed Tadej Pogacar (Slo/UAE Team Emirates-XRG) first with a time of 73hrs 56mins 26secs, followed by Remco Evenepoel (Bel/Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) at +6mins 26secs, and Isaac del Toro (Mex/UAE Team Emirates-XRG) at +9mins 42secs.

Paul Seixas (Fra/Decathlon-CMA CGM) secured fourth place at +11mins 56secs, with Lenny Martinez (Fra/Bahrain-Victorious) in fifth at +13mins 2secs. The top ten was rounded out by Mattias Skjelmose (Den/Lidl-Trek) at +14mins 59secs, Juan Ayuso (Spa/Lidl-Trek) at +17mins 48secs, Richard Carapaz (Ecu/EF Education-Easypost) at +20mins, and Tom Pidcock (Gbr/Pinarello-Q36.5) at +21mins 30secs.
