What’s next for the Florida Panthers and Sergei Bobrovsky?
The Florida Panthers have opted not to trade goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky at the NHL Trade Deadline, raising questions about his future with the team. General manager Bill Zito has indicated a desire to sign Bobrovsky to a new contract, emphasizing his importance to the franchise.
Bobrovsky, who has spent seven seasons with the Panthers since signing in 2019, has a record of 196 wins, 109 losses, and 21 overtime losses, along with a .903 save percentage and a 2.80 goals against average. He is currently eighth on the NHL’s all-time wins list with 451 victories.
In a statement, Zito remarked, “Sergei is a part of our franchise, a part of our core,” highlighting the goaltender’s integral role in the team’s recent successes, including three consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Final and championships in 2024 and 2025.
Despite his contributions, Bobrovsky’s performance has raised some concerns, leading to discussions about his future. Zito acknowledged, “Perhaps his numbers are down, but I’m not sure ‘decline’ is the word I would use,” suggesting a belief in Bobrovsky’s potential to rebound.
In addition to the Bobrovsky situation, the Panthers made notable trades leading up to the deadline. They traded defenseman Jeff Petry to the Minnesota Wild for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2026. Petry, who played 58 games with the Panthers this season, recently celebrated his 1,000th career NHL game.
The Panthers also acquired forward Vinnie Hinostroza from the Wild in exchange for future considerations and claimed Cole Reinhardt off waivers from the Vegas Golden Knights. Reinhardt had seven points in 44 games with the Golden Knights this season.
As of now, the Panthers hold a record of 30 wins, 29 losses, and 3 overtime losses, placing them in 8th place in the Atlantic Division. The team is navigating a challenging season, and the decisions made regarding Bobrovsky and other players will be crucial as they aim to improve their standing.
Bobrovsky is at the end of a seven-year, $70 million deal he signed in 2019, and the outcome of the ongoing negotiations could significantly impact the team’s future. Zito has expressed a commitment to retaining key players, stating, “We want to continue to sign our players.” Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specifics of Bobrovsky’s potential new contract.
