Georgetown Basketball Triumphs

“Today was about our defense. It was about our physicality. We were prepared,” said Head Coach Ed Cooley following Georgetown’s 63-56 victory over DePaul in the first round of the BIG EAST Tournament.

The game, held at Madison Square Garden, showcased Georgetown’s resilience as they improved their record to 15-17. Vince Iwuchukwu led the Hoyas with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Jeremiah Williams matched his scoring output. Mack contributed 16 points, helping the team secure a hard-fought win.

Georgetown’s performance was marked by a solid defensive strategy, which Cooley emphasized as crucial to their success. The Hoyas shot 39.3% from the field and struggled from beyond the arc, hitting only 21.4% of their three-point attempts. In contrast, DePaul managed a 34.5% shooting percentage from the field and found more success from three-point range at 42.9%.

Georgetown’s dominance on the boards was evident, as they outrebounded DePaul 42-30. This advantage played a significant role in their ability to control the game and secure the win.

As the team prepares for their next challenge, they will face the Villanova Wildcats in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament on March 12, 2026. Georgetown holds a historical edge over Villanova in the tournament, boasting a 6-2 record against them.

“It has been a long year for us with respect to coming down the stretch and losing games by a possession, losing at the buzzer,” Cooley reflected, acknowledging the challenges his team has faced this season.

Iwuchukwu also expressed gratitude for the support from his teammates and fans, stating, “My teammates believed in me, talked to me during halftime telling me to keep my head up. I went out there and just played my heart out.” He added, “Our fans showed out their last game of the whole entire first day, so it just meant a lot and it’s going to give us some energy going into tomorrow.”

Georgetown’s victory marks their 58th win in the history of the BIG EAST Tournament, further solidifying their competitive legacy in college basketball.

As they look ahead to their matchup against Villanova, the Hoyas will aim to build on this momentum and continue their pursuit of a championship title.
