LSU’s Preseason Outlook
The LSU Tigers have been projected to finish fifth in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in the 2026 preseason poll. This forecast places them behind Georgia, Texas, Ole Miss, and Texas A&M, but ahead of teams like Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Florida. The results of this annual poll, compiled from media members’ votes, were released on Friday.
Despite the fifth-place prediction, expectations are considerable for LSU as they enter their first season under coach Lane Kiffin. The team was a major topic of conversation during SEC Media Days in Tampa, Florida, particularly dominating discussions on Thursday, the final day of the four-day event. Many observers have anticipated the Bayou Bengals could contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff in Kiffin’s inaugural year.
The fifth-place ranking positions LSU on the edge of playoff contention, especially considering the conference sent five teams to the College Football Playoff during the 2025-2026 season, which included Oklahoma in its first year in the conference. The team’s performance relative to these preseason expectations could significantly impact their standing as the season progresses into November and December.
All-SEC Selections and Coaching Transition
Individual recognition was also given to several LSU players, with nine Tigers earning spots on various All-SEC teams. Tight end Trey’Dez Green and left tackle Jordan Seaton were named to the first-team offense. On the defensive side, edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen and linebacker Whit Weeks secured first-team defense honors. Punter Grant Chadwick also received a first-team selection.
Other players recognized include center Braelin Moore on the third-team offense, cornerback DJ Pickett and safety Ty Benefield on the second-team defense, and linebacker TJ Dottery on the third-team defense. These selections highlight the individual talent within the LSU roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The high expectations surrounding LSU come after a significant coaching change. Last season, the Tigers finished tenth in the league, a result that led to the departure of coach Brian Kelly. This outcome was a notable drop from their preseason prediction of finishing fourth in the poll that year. The subsequent hiring of Lane Kiffin generated considerable buzz, making the program a central focus at SEC Media Days.
During the media event, Kiffin addressed various topics, including his decision to leave Ole Miss before their College Football Playoff run in November of the previous year. He also spoke about a profile published in May and his recent move to reduce his presence on social media, which he mentioned began as a challenge from his son, Knox. Kiffin expressed his approach to challenges, stating, “I’ve built my life on pushing out of comfort.”
Looking Ahead to the Season
The coach acknowledged the pressure associated with leading LSU and the media’s expectations for immediate success. He described it as an “awesome challenge” and a situation that makes him “uncomfortable,” aligning with his personal philosophy. This perspective sets the tone for his first year at the helm of the program.
Historically, the media’s preseason predictions for the SEC champion have not always aligned with the final outcome. Since 1992, the preseason predicted champion has gone on to win the SEC title game only ten times. This suggests that while the preseason poll offers a snapshot of expectations, the actual season can unfold differently.
Only two out of 164 voters predicted LSU to win the SEC crown this year, placing them among eight teams that received at least one first-place vote. The team is scheduled to commence preseason camp in early August. Their season is set to begin at home against Clemson on September 5.
