Hampshire College to Close Amid Financial Struggles

“The financial realities we face: declining enrollment, the weight of long-standing debt, and stalled progress on land development left us no other responsible path,” stated Jose Fuentes, Chair of the Hampshire College Board of Trustees, as the institution announced its impending closure.

Hampshire College, located in Amherst, Massachusetts, has been a notable institution since its founding in 1965, celebrated for its unique, student-driven curriculum and progressive values. However, the college has faced significant challenges in recent years, including a nearly 50% drop in enrollment since the fall of 2015.

In the fall of 2026, Hampshire enrolled only 168 new students, falling short of its target of 300. This decline in enrollment has been compounded by financial struggles, including a $21 million bond that the college was unable to refinance.

The college’s endowment stands at approximately $26.5 million, with $23.5 million of that amount in restricted funds, limiting its financial flexibility. The New England Commission of Higher Education had previously placed Hampshire on show cause status due to concerns regarding its fiscal resources.

Final-year students will be permitted to complete their degrees at Hampshire, while other students will have transfer options to partner institutions such as Amherst College and Smith College.

Ken Burns, a renowned filmmaker and Hampshire alumnus, expressed his deep connection to the college, saying, “Hampshire College is woven into the very fabric of who I am. It’s where I learned that there is freedom in searching, and even in failure.”

Current students have also voiced their sentiments about the closure. William “Wolfie” Krebs remarked, “I hope it’s not seen as a failure, because it wasn’t. It’s brought so much influence into the world and into the community, the immediate area.”

Joan Priester, a sophomore at the college, reflected on the broader implications of the closure, stating, “I think really the death of Hampshire College is kind of a reflection of the current conditions of the times, the material conditions of the economy faltering and of the social fabric of America deteriorating.”

Hampshire College’s closure marks the end of an era for an institution that has been a beacon of alternative education for decades. Details remain unconfirmed regarding any potential future developments or initiatives that may arise from this situation.
