“Join us in honoring the life and legacy of Jeff Webb, founder of Varsity Spirit and modern cheerleading,” Varsity Spirit wrote in a statement following his passing.
Jeff Webb, who was 76 years old, died in an accident, although details surrounding the incident remain unconfirmed. Webb was a transformative figure in cheerleading, founding Varsity Spirit in 1974 and serving as the president of the International Cheer Union.
His work helped elevate cheerleading from a sideline activity to a major global competitive sport, contributing to its evolution into a multi-billion-dollar industry. Under his leadership, Varsity Brands, which includes Varsity Spirit, was acquired by Bain Capital in 2018 for an estimated $2.9 billion.
Webb’s influence extended beyond business; he was instrumental in shaping the culture of cheerleading, impacting generations of athletes, coaches, and teams. His estimated net worth was likely north of $100 million as of 2026.
“Varsity Brands is saddened by the passing of Jeff Webb, founder of Varsity Spirit and modern cheerleading,” the organization stated. “We extend our condolences to Jeff’s family and loved ones, and to the many across the spirit community who were influenced by his work.”

He began his journey in cheerleading while still in school, working with the National Cheerleaders Association, and later attended the University of Oklahoma, where he served as a yell leader on the cheer squad.
Webb is survived by his wife, Cheri R Ganong, and their two children. His family has not released a statement regarding his death as of now.
“Jeff played a pivotal role in shaping cheerleading as it exists today and in building a community that has impacted generations of athletes, coaches, and teams,” Varsity Brands added.
