What does the future hold for JFK Airport as Ethiopian Airlines prepares to transition its operations to the New Terminal One? The answer is a significant upgrade, with the new terminal set to open in 2026 as part of a $19 billion transformation of JFK Airport.

The New Terminal One will feature 23 gates and will span 2.6 million square feet upon its full completion in 2030. The first phase, which includes new arrivals and departures halls along with 14 new gates, is expected to welcome passengers in just a few years.

Jennifer Aument, Chief Executive Officer of The New Terminal One at JFK, expressed enthusiasm about Ethiopian Airlines joining the terminal’s diverse group of international carriers, stating, “We are honored to welcome Ethiopian Airlines to the New Terminal One’s diverse group of international carriers.” Mesfin Tasew, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group, emphasized the importance of this partnership, saying, “Partnering with The New Terminal One is a significant step in the service we offer to/from JFK airport.”

The New Terminal One aims to achieve a top 5-star Skytrax rating, and it will include modern amenities, elevated retail and dining options, and sustainable design. Additionally, the construction project is committed to local inclusion and labor participation, with a target of 20% for minority-owned business enterprises.

However, JFK Airport is currently facing challenges. Severe weather has led to hundreds of flight cancellations and delays, with approximately 8,000 flights canceled nationwide. Furthermore, the partial government shutdown has affected TSA workers, resulting in slower security lines at airports, including JFK, where around 60,000 TSA workers have been impacted.

As passenger volumes increase, particularly during peak travel times like spring break, disruptions at JFK Airport are likely to continue. Travelers are left hoping for improvements in both weather conditions and operational efficiency.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full impact of these ongoing issues on the airport’s operations as the new terminal’s opening approaches.
