Winter Paralympic Games 2026 Set for Milano-Cortina
The Winter Paralympic Games 2026 are set to take place in Milano-Cortina, Italy, from March 6 to March 15, featuring a record participation of 612 athletes from 56 national Paralympic committees. This event will include 79 events across six sports, marking a significant milestone in the history of the Winter Paralympics.
Among the athletes representing Mexico is Arly Velásquez Peñaloza, who stands out as the only competitor from the country. Velásquez has an impressive track record, having participated in four previous Winter Paralympic Games since 2010. He aims to secure Mexico’s first medal in the Winter Paralympic Games in 2026, a goal he has been training rigorously for.
Velásquez has dedicated 17 years to winter sports, and his journey has not been without challenges. He has invested approximately 3 million pesos for a season of training and estimates the total cost of his Paralympic cycle to be around 670,000 dollars. “No es que intente morir, pero si estoy vivo es para vivir al máximo,” he stated, expressing his determination and passion for the sport.
The opening ceremony will take place at the Arena di Verona, a UNESCO World Heritage site, adding a historic backdrop to the event. This venue is expected to host a spectacular display, celebrating the spirit of the Paralympic movement.
