Kal Somani, a US-based entrepreneur, is leading a consortium to acquire the Rajasthan Royals for an impressive $1.63 billion. This acquisition marks a significant milestone as it makes the Rajasthan Royals the first IPL franchise to be sold for over a billion dollars.
Somani, who has been a minority investor in the Rajasthan Royals since 2021, expressed enthusiasm about the investment, stating, “We see huge potential with this investment, and we are excited for the future of the IPL.” He is also the founder and CEO of several companies, including IntraEdge, Truyo & Truyo.AI, and Academian.
The consortium backing Somani includes notable figures such as Rob Walton and Sheila Ford Hamp. This group also has ownership stakes in other franchises, including Paarl Royals and Barbados Royals.
Previously, the Rajasthan Royals were owned by British-Indian businessman Manoj Badale, who held a 65% stake in the team. The franchise was originally acquired by Emerging Media Ventures for $67 million in 2007, highlighting the dramatic increase in its valuation over the years.
Kal Somani is also a co-owner of the Motor City Golf Club, further diversifying his investment portfolio. His focus has been on areas such as data privacy, AI governance, and sports technology, which are increasingly relevant in today’s sports landscape.
The acquisition deal is currently pending approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), and observers expect the announcement to be made soon, likely within the next four to five days. Details remain unconfirmed.
