A tornado moved through Ottawa, Kansas, on Monday evening, raising concerns about the extent of the damage it caused. Fortunately, authorities reported no injuries, despite significant structural damage and widespread power outages across the city.
A tornado warning was issued around 7:25 p.m. as the storm tracked west to east through Franklin County. By 7:09 p.m., approximately 3,834 residents were without power, and the Ottawa Police Department reported heavy damage concentrated between 15th and 19th streets.
Damage reports indicated that the T-Mobile store had the front of the building ripped off, while the Knights Inn at 17th and Main suffered severe roof damage, affecting the second floor of the two-story structure. Additionally, the roof was removed from a Daylight Donuts, and a gas station also experienced roof damage.
As of 7:30 p.m., the local radio station KOFO lost power and has been off the air since. Residents were advised to stay off the roads and avoid any downed power lines, as recovery efforts began.
Brad Howard, a local resident, noted the extent of the destruction, stating, “The T-Mobile store has had the front of the building ripped off,” and further emphasized the damage at the Knights Inn, where the roof was torn off and the second floor was heavily damaged.
Despite the chaos, the Ottawa Police Department confirmed that there were no reported injuries, which is a relief for the community. They described the damage as “heavy” but were still assessing the full impact of the tornado.
As recovery efforts continue, officials are working to restore power and clear debris from the affected areas. The situation remains fluid, and details about the full extent of the damage are still being gathered.
Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious as cleanup operations proceed, and they will provide updates as more information becomes available. The community is coming together to support those affected by this severe weather event.
