Kawhi Leonard trade to Raptors paused amid NBA investigation into Clippers

Investigation Halts Leonard’s Return to Toronto

The trade involving Kawhi Leonard, which would send him from the LA Clippers to the Toronto Raptors, has been put on hold. This delay stems from an ongoing NBA investigation into allegations of salary-cap circumvention by the Clippers. Both teams confirmed the pause, indicating the deal will not be finalized until the league concludes its probe.

The Raptors, who had agreed to reacquire Leonard, stated they are eager to add him to their roster but will wait for the investigation’s completion. This caution is due to concerns that they could assume the risk of potential penalties, including the voiding or alteration of Leonard’s contract, if the trade were finalized prematurely. The NBA informed the Raptors that proceeding with the trade would mean inheriting such risks.

The Clippers also acknowledged the investigation and their participation in it. They were notified that the Raptors would face potential penalties if the trade went through before the probe’s conclusion. The Clippers expressed confidence that the trade would be finalized once the investigation is complete.

Details of the Proposed Trade and Investigation

The agreement in principle, reached on June 30, would see Leonard return to the team he led to the 2019 NBA championship. In exchange, the Clippers are set to receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, and a package of draft picks, including unprotected first-round selections in 2031 and 2033. Leonard was recently in Toronto for Kyle Lowry’s retirement announcement, and Dick visited the Clippers’ facility at Intuit Dome.

The NBA’s investigation, which began approximately ten months ago, focuses on allegations connecting Leonard, the Clippers, and an environmental company named Aspiration. Aspiration served as the team’s jersey-patch partner until the end of the 2022-23 season. The allegations, detailed in a podcast series, suggest that the Clippers, and chairman Steve Ballmer, may have used Aspiration’s sponsorship to circumvent league salary-cap rules.

The Clippers have denied wrongdoing, stating that they did not funnel money to Leonard through Aspiration. They claim to have been victims of fraud initiated by Joe Sanberg, Aspiration’s co-founder, who has since been sentenced to 14 years in prison for a scheme that defrauded lenders and investors. The team emphasized the uncertainty this situation has created for their organization, fans, the Raptors, and the players involved.

League’s Stance and Future Outlook

An NBA spokesperson indicated that there is no specific timeline for the investigation’s conclusion but expects the firm conducting the work to finalize it in the coming weeks. Commissioner Adam Silver previously stated that the league cannot investigate indefinitely and needs to wrap up the probe, acknowledging that it is far along. The upcoming NBA Board of Governors meetings are seen as a potential opportunity for the investigation to conclude.

The league’s decision to maintain its stance on the investigation, despite the public announcement of the trade, highlights the unprecedented nature of the situation. Had the specifics of the trade remained private until the investigation’s completion, the league could have avoided some of the current complications. This development is not necessarily seen as a sign of significant discipline for the Clippers or Leonard, but the potential for Leonard’s contract to be voided remains a primary obstacle.

Leonard, a seven-time All-NBA forward, averaged 25.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.7 steals over six seasons with the Clippers. He played 65 games last season, averaging a career-high 27.9 points. The Raptors expressed their eagerness to bring him back to Toronto and hope for a swift resolution for all parties involved.
