Microsoft will fully retire the Outlook Lite app for Android on May 25, 2026, a move that follows the app’s initial launch in 2022. Designed specifically for users in emerging markets with devices that have just 1GB of RAM, Outlook Lite has surpassed 10 million downloads on the Play Store as of September 2024.
After the retirement date, the app will cease fetching new emails, and its core features will be disabled. Microsoft recommends that users still utilizing Outlook Lite switch to the full Outlook app for Android, which offers a more comprehensive email experience.
Outlook Lite was tailored to function effectively on 2G and 3G networks, making it suitable for users with limited internet access. However, it did not integrate cloud services or support enterprise features such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP), which are available in the full version.
The app was removed from the Google Play Store on October 6, 2025, as part of Microsoft’s strategy to streamline its offerings. “The retirement of Outlook Lite is part of a broader effort to reduce overlap and focus development and support on Microsoft Outlook Mobile, our primary mobile email experience,” a Microsoft spokesperson stated.
Users of Outlook Lite will see an Upgrade option to install the main Outlook Mobile app if they are still using the Lite version. Microsoft has emphasized that if users appreciate the Outlook Lite experience, they should consider making the switch to the full Outlook app.
As the deadline approaches, it is clear that Microsoft is consolidating its resources to enhance the user experience for its primary mobile email platform. The transition to the full Outlook app is expected to provide users with better functionality and support.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional features that may be introduced in the full Outlook app to accommodate former Outlook Lite users. However, the company is likely to focus on improving the overall performance and user satisfaction as it phases out the Lite version.
