Microsoft Unveils Project Helix at GDC 2026
Microsoft has officially announced Project Helix, the codename for its next generation Xbox console, during the Game Developer Conference on March 11, 2026. This new console aims to deliver leading performance and is designed to play both Xbox console and PC games.
Powered by a custom AMD System on Chip (SoC), Project Helix will feature FSR Next technology, enhancing graphics and performance. A Microsoft representative stated, “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” This technology is expected to push the boundaries of rendering and simulation.
Project Helix will also support next-generation ray tracing capabilities, integrating neural texture compression and supporting DirectStorage combined with Zstd compression. This advancement aims to improve efficiency, scale, and visual ambition in gaming.
As part of its commitment to gamers, Microsoft revealed that the Xbox Play Anywhere catalog now spans more than 1,500 games. The company plans to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Xbox by bringing back iconic titles, further enriching the gaming experience.
Alpha versions of the hardware for Project Helix are set to be shipped to developers beginning in 2027, allowing for early testing and feedback. Jack Huynh, a representative from AMD, emphasized the collaboration, stating, “Project Helix is a multi-year deep co-engineering partnership driving next-gen performance, breakthrough graphics, and compatibility with your existing Xbox game library.”
Additionally, Xbox mode will begin rolling out to Windows in select markets starting in April 2026, expanding accessibility for gamers across platforms.
