Progressive lawmakers are pushing for a federal minimum wage increase to $25 an hour, backed by a coalition of over 100 advocacy groups. The Living Wage for All Act was introduced by Rep. Delia Ramirez and Rep. Analilia Mejia. The current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour, unchanged since 2009.

Over 100 labor, civil rights, and advocacy groups have expressed their support for the legislation. This movement has evolved from the Fight for $15 campaign into a broader push for a true living wage. Saru Jayaraman, a prominent advocate, stated, “This is a worker-led movement that has grown from the groundbreaking Fight for $15 into a nationwide push for a true living wage.” Polling indicates strong public support.

In addition to the federal proposal, cities like Los Angeles and New York City are considering their own increases. Los Angeles is looking at raising its minimum wage to as high as $30 an hour by 2030. Similarly, New York City is also proposing a minimum wage of $30 per hour.

One Fair Wage aims to advocate for wage increases in 25 states by 2026. They emphasize the importance of addressing tipped wages as part of this initiative. In Boulder, Colorado, local officials are considering changes to tipped wages as they prepare for an increase in the minimum wage.

The current minimum wage in Boulder is $16.82, with tipped wages set at $13.80 after offsetting measures. Shannon Aulabaugh remarked that regardless of changes being made, “the tip wage earner has to make at least minimum wage.” This reflects ongoing concerns about labor rights and fair compensation amid rising costs of living.

As discussions continue around these proposals, it remains clear that many workers are struggling under the current wage structure. Noah Finley pointed out that members in Illinois are facing challenges with the existing $15 an hour minimum wage.

The push for a higher minimum wage highlights significant economic disparities and aims to improve living conditions for workers across the nation. Advocacy groups argue that increasing the minimum wage is essential to meet the rising cost of living.
