As the spring sports season approaches, the North Allegheny School District is buzzing with excitement, particularly around the softball program. Zoe Rychel, a junior softball player, has recently made headlines with her commitment to play at Bucknell University in the fall of 2027. This announcement comes as she prepares to lead her team as captain this season.
Rychel’s impressive track record includes being recognized as a preseason player to watch by Trib HSSN. Last season, she earned a spot on the 6A second-team for the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association All-State team as a sophomore. Her performance was notable, with a batting average of .438, 28 hits, including 12 doubles, and 13 runs batted in (RBI) across 19 games played.
In addition to her offensive skills, Rychel showcased her defensive prowess with a .984 fielding percentage, recording 51 putouts and nine assists. Her achievements have positioned her as a key player in the North Allegheny softball program.
The North Allegheny softball team is set to open its season against Shaler on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., and Rychel’s leadership will be crucial as they aim for success. The anticipation for the season is heightened by her commitment to Bucknell, which reflects her dedication to both academics and athletics.
Meanwhile, the North Allegheny School District is also navigating challenges outside of sports. Recently, the district announced it would implement a flexible instruction day due to unsafe bus routes caused by adverse weather conditions. This decision aligns with similar actions taken by Chartiers Valley School District, which announced remote instruction due to power outages and blocked bus routes affecting thousands of customers.
As of now, Duquesne Light reported approximately 11,000 customers without power, while West Penn Power reported around 17,000 customers affected. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph have been recorded in Western Pennsylvania, contributing to the disruptions.
