Road closures for the Pittsburgh Marathon will begin as early as Friday, affecting traffic throughout the weekend. Thousands of runners will race in the marathon on Sunday, which will lead to significant disruptions across the city.

The marathon course takes participants on a tour through 14 city neighborhoods, from the West End Bridge to Homewood. The first closures will start at noon on Friday along the Boulevard of the Allies between Wood Street and Stanwix Street.

Key closure times:

  • Friday: Road closures begin at noon
  • Saturday: Closures for the 5K and Pittsburgh Kids Marathon start at 6:45 a.m.
  • Sunday: Closures begin at 1:45 a.m. and end around 2:30 p.m.

The Boulevard of the Allies is expected to reopen on Sunday evening. P3R, the event organizer, will post no parking signs along closed streets. Vehicles parked in violation of these signs will be towed.

Troy Schooley from P3R stated, “Once the final runner crosses the third mile, we will reopen sections at a time, which is great. It’s kind of a rolling opening.” He also urged residents to move their cars from restricted areas to avoid towing.

This year’s marathon includes various events, including a 5K race and activities for kids. The impact on Downtown Pittsburgh’s traffic could be significant as thousands gather for these events.
