The wider picture
Pokémon Champions is set to change the series’ competitive scene by replacing mainline Pokémon games at events like Pokémon World Championships. This new title, scheduled for launch on April 8, 2026, for both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, aims to redefine how players engage with Pokémon battles.
The game will adopt a free-to-start model, allowing players to explore its features without an upfront cost. However, it will include a Premium Battle Pass for those seeking additional content. Players can also purchase a Starter Pack, which provides them with 50 Pokémon instantly, along with 30 Teammate Tickets and 50 Training Tickets, enhancing their initial experience.
In Pokémon Champions, players will engage in online one-on-one and double battles, with the option to participate in both Ranked and Casual Modes. This flexibility is designed to cater to a wide range of players, from casual fans to serious competitors. Additionally, players can recruit new monsters daily, fostering a dynamic gameplay experience.
Victory Points (VP) can be earned through battles, which can then be used for various in-game purchases, adding a layer of strategy to the competitive landscape. The game will also feature Mega Evolutions, allowing players to utilize powerful forms of their Pokémon during battles, significantly impacting the game’s tactical depth.
As part of its competitive offerings, Pokémon Champions will host Online Competitions with preset rules on a seasonal basis, providing players with structured opportunities to test their skills against others. The game will link to Pokémon Home, enabling players to bring Pokémon from previous games into this new environment, thereby expanding their options and strategies.
In a recent press release, it was revealed that Mega Meganium will have the newly discovered Ability Mega Sol, allowing it to use its moves as if the weather were harsh sunlight. Similarly, Mega Emboar will feature the Mold Breaker Ability, which makes its moves unaffected by the target’s Ability. Mega Feraligatr’s Ability Dragonize will turn Normal-type moves into Dragon-type moves, boosting their power by 20%. These new abilities are expected to add significant depth to battles.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the pricing for the Starter Pack and the Premium Battle Pass, as well as the exact release date for the mobile version, which is anticipated to launch later this year. Observers are keenly awaiting further announcements that will clarify these uncertainties and provide additional insights into the game’s full potential.
