Sporting Kansas City has acquired Brazilian defender Diego Borges from Zalaegerszeg TE, signing him to a four-and-a-half-year contract that extends through the 2029-2030 season, with an option for the 2030-2031 season. At just 21 years old, Borges is expected to bring youthful energy and skill to the team’s defensive lineup.

Borges, who will occupy an international spot on Sporting’s roster, made seven appearances with Zalaegerszeg in Hungary. Prior to his time in Europe, he played for the U-20 team of Santos FC and had experience in Brazil’s Série B with Amazonas FC.

David Lee, the President of Soccer Operations & General Manager for Sporting Kansas City, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We are delighted that Diego has decided to join Sporting KC for the next stage of his career.” He highlighted Borges as a promising young talent, noting, “Diego is a young and exciting prospect at center back who has experienced a quick rise from Serie B in Brazil to showing excellent performances in Hungary.”

As a part of the U22 Initiative, Borges represents a strategic move for Sporting Kansas City, allowing them to compete for emerging talents. Lee added, “The U22 Initiative allows us to compete for players of this profile and our role now is to help him continue to develop his potential and contribute to our success.” This initiative aims to foster young players and integrate them into the MLS framework.

Observers are keen to see how Borges will adapt to the league and contribute to Sporting Kansas City’s ambitions in the upcoming seasons. His previous experiences in both Brazil and Hungary may provide him with a unique perspective and skill set as he transitions to Major League Soccer.
