A Level 4 of 5 severe storm risk has been issued for central North Carolina as severe weather approaches the region. The warning, which includes Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and a Tornado Watch, has been in effect throughout the day, prompting emergency officials to take proactive measures.
As of Monday night, several thousand residents were without power in Wake County and surrounding areas, with 1,600 customers specifically affected in Franklin County. The storm has already caused significant damage, including a tornado that touched down in Charlotte, where winds reached up to 85 miles per hour, tearing the roof off a warehouse.
Emergency officials in Fayetteville are actively working to protect residents, operating 17 fire stations staffed with five to seven firefighters each. Additionally, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has maintained 10 to 12 trucks on the road, with crews working 12-hour shifts to respond to any emergencies that may arise.
The Salvation Army shelter remains open for those in need, serving meals to the community. On Monday, 89 individuals were provided lunch, highlighting the ongoing support for residents affected by the severe weather.
Governor Josh Stein urged North Carolinians to stay alert, stating, “As this storm moves across the state, North Carolinians should stay alert and be prepared to take cover if severe weather develops nearby.” NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray echoed this sentiment, noting, “We have seen multiple tornado warnings so far today, and we will continue to see the chance of severe weather throughout the day.”
In preparation for potential disruptions, Laura Smith advised residents to have emergency supplies ready, emphasizing, “So a good rule of thumb is having one gallon of water per person, per day.” This guidance is crucial as the storm continues to develop.
