In a significant development for the healthcare sector, Sutter Health and Allina Health signed a Letter of Intent on March 17, 2026, to merge their operations. This merger is poised to reshape healthcare delivery in Northern California and Minneapolis, as both organizations aim to enhance access and affordability of care for their patients.
The combined nonprofit health system will create a robust network comprising 39 hospitals and over 400 primary and specialty care sites. This expansive system is expected to serve more than five million patients across its regions, marking a notable increase in healthcare capacity and accessibility.
As part of the merger, Sutter Health will maintain its headquarters in Northern California, while Allina Health will continue to operate under its name with its regional headquarters located in Minneapolis. Warner Thomas has been appointed as the President and CEO of the combined system, with Lisa Shannon remaining as the President and CEO of Allina Health, which will become Sutter Health’s Upper Midwest Division.
The organizations anticipate closing the merger by the end of 2026, pending regulatory approval. This merger is expected to involve a substantial investment of more than $2 billion in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure and services in these regions.
In terms of workforce, the combined system will include approximately 18,000 aligned physicians and 88,000 team members, creating a formidable team dedicated to patient care. The merger also aims to enhance artificial intelligence and digital health capabilities, positioning the new entity at the forefront of healthcare innovation.
Warner Thomas expressed optimism about the merger, stating, “When Allina Health joins Sutter Health, we look forward to making significant investments that improve care access and patient experience in Minnesota and western Wisconsin communities.” Lisa Shannon echoed this sentiment, highlighting the potential for innovation, saying, “As one nationally leading, locally committed nonprofit health system, we will be uniquely positioned to be at the forefront of innovation.”
Patrick Blake and Tim Welsh also emphasized the importance of this merger, with Blake noting, “Together, with our combined resources and greater reach, we will lead the way for evolving how and where care is delivered,” and Welsh stating, “By coming together, we can build upon that legacy, combining our expertise to provide preventive and life-saving care.” This merger is not only a strategic move for both organizations but also a significant step towards improving healthcare delivery for millions of patients.
