Coronation Street duo torn apart as Audrey Roberts drops bombshell news

Joanna Lumley reflects on her role in Coronation Street

Audrey Roberts (played by Sue Nicholls) declares it is time to return to work despite her son’s death on Coronation Street being so recent.

In upcoming Coronation Street scenes, Audrey breaks the news to David Platt (Jack P. Shepherd) and Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon) that she is selling the barbers so she can afford to buy back her house.

She will be returning to work in the salon which means one of them will have to go and lose their role there.

David and Maira try to talk Audrey around – worried about her health as well as their careers.

However, Audrey orders them out of the salon and locks the doors behind her.

Audrey has been off work following her serial killer son Stephen Reid’s (Todd Boyce) death.

Producer Iain MacLeod recently told The Metro: “It’s like when you watch a movie and it’s the end of the film and that’s that and the protagonist walks off into the sunset as the credits roll.

“But obviously soap doesn’t end. It goes on and you need to have the sequel to the movie in your heads before you’ve even started telling the story of the first movie.”

He said there are “wide-ranging consequences” to Stephen’s exit both “emotionally and practically” going forward.

Stephen died last month after being run over by Peter Barlow (xx), and Audrey is determined to see Peter go down for killing her son.

Stephen actor Todd revealed on This Morning he could have spent an additional six months on the ITV soap.

“Iain toyed with the idea of [giving Stephen] another six months,” he shared. “But I think the audience were losing their minds – they wanted justice!”

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV and ITVX.
