2026 World Cup: How teams can advance to the knockout rounds

Advancing to the Knockout Stage

The 2026 World Cup introduces an expanded format, featuring 48 teams, which means that finishing third in a group does not automatically lead to elimination. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups will secure automatic qualification for the knockout stage. The remaining eight spots in the 32-team knockout bracket will be filled by the highest-ranked third-place teams.

These third-place teams are ranked based on several criteria: points, goal difference, goals scored, and other tiebreakers. This new structure creates a dynamic race among 12 teams for those eight coveted spots, making the final days of the group stage particularly compelling.

Tiebreaker Rules and Confirmed Matches

In the group stage, a win earns three points, a draw earns one point, and a loss earns no points. If teams are tied on points, specific tiebreakers are applied in a set order. Initially, head-to-head performance between tied teams is considered, including most points obtained, superior goal difference, and most goals scored in those matches.

Should teams remain tied after these head-to-head criteria, further tiebreakers come into play. These include superior goal difference across all group matches, most goals scored in all group matches, the highest team conduct score (which accounts for yellow and red cards), and finally, the FIFA World Ranking.

Several teams have already secured their place in the Round of 32. Mexico confirmed its qualification with a victory over South Korea in its second group game and finished at the top of Group A with nine points after a win against Czechia. Co-hosts United States and Canada also booked their spots, with Canada advancing as runners-up in their group. The United States secured the top spot in Group D after matches against Paraguay and Australia.

Confirmed Round of 32 fixtures include:

  • South Africa vs. Canada: Scheduled for Sunday, June 28, at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, United States. Canada, as Group B runner-up, will face South Africa, who advanced as the second-best team in Group A.
  • Brazil vs. Japan: Taking place on Monday, June 29, at NRG Stadium in Houston, United States. Brazil secured a knockout spot after a match against Scotland, finishing with seven points. Japan will face Brazil after a draw with Sweden, confirming its spot as runners-up in Group F.

Third-Place Standings and Progression

The criteria for the eight best third-place teams to advance are based on points, goal difference, goals scored, the highest team conduct score in all group matches (considering yellow and red cards), and the FIFA World Ranking. The third-place standings are expected to change significantly as the final group stage matches are played.

The expanded format ensures that no teams from the same group can meet again before the quarterfinals, with third-place teams being slotted into the bracket accordingly. For example, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s confirmation for their matchup was set after Sweden drew with Japan in Group F.
