Oklahoma City Thunder re-sign Isaiah Hartenstein through 2028-29 season

Report: Thunder re-sign Isaiah Hartenstein through 2028-29 season

Thunder Secure Key Center

The Oklahoma City Thunder have reportedly reached an agreement with center Isaiah Hartenstein on a three-year contract extension. This new deal is set to keep Hartenstein with the franchise through the 2028-29 season.

According to reports, the extension is valued at $75 million over three seasons. This new agreement follows Hartenstein’s original three-year, $87 million deal signed before the 2024-25 campaign. The Thunder had a $28.5 million team option for the upcoming 2026-27 season, which was the final year of his initial contract.

Hartenstein, who is 28 years old, was represented in negotiations by Andrew Morrison and Aaron Mintz of CAA Sports. The new contract reportedly includes a 15% trade kicker and a mutual option that allows both parties to potentially rework the agreement.

Hartenstein’s Impact on the Thunder

Hartenstein has become a significant player for the Thunder, particularly in their recent success. He played a crucial role in the team’s 2025 NBA championship season, where he averaged 11.2 points per game. This past season, he maintained strong performance, averaging 9.2 points per game on 62.2% shooting, along with 9.4 rebounds.

The 7-foot center has been a fixture in Oklahoma City’s rotation, starting 97 of his 104 regular-season appearances over the past two seasons. He also started all 23 games during the Thunder’s 2025 NBA championship run. His contributions have been noted for his sturdiness and below-the-rim physicality, which proved especially effective in defending players like Spurs center Victor Wembanyama in the Western Conference finals.

Beyond his scoring and rebounding, Hartenstein’s passing and screening abilities have helped transform the Thunder’s offense. His playmaking from the high post has introduced new strategic elements, and he has provided a strong screener for players such as back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He has also been integral to the Thunder’s league-best defense over the last couple of seasons.

Offseason Moves for Financial Flexibility

To accommodate Hartenstein’s new contract and manage their financial position, the Thunder have been active this offseason in creating cap space. The team has made several trades to shed salary and maintain financial flexibility.

In recent weeks, the Thunder traded guard Aaron Wiggins to the Atlanta Hawks. Additionally, guard Isaiah Joe was sent to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for two future second-round picks. These moves were made to clear roster spots and salary, aiming to duck under the NBA’s punitive second-apron threshold and facilitate Hartenstein’s extension.

Hartenstein was originally a 2017 second-round pick and began his career playing for four different teams in four seasons: the Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and the LA Clippers, starting only six games during that period. He joined the New York Knicks in 2022, becoming an important part of their team for two seasons. His combination of rebounding, rim protection, physicality, and playmaking made him a sought-after player in the summer of 2024, leading to his initial signing with the Thunder alongside Alex Caruso as key veteran acquisitions before their title run.

The new agreement ties Hartenstein to the Thunder through the 2028-29 season.
