Bobby Wagner humorously declared his new title as Dr. Bobby Wagner during his commencement speech at Utah State University on May 5, 2026. He received an honorary doctoral degree while addressing over 6,300 graduates from the Class of 2026.
Wagner played linebacker for Utah State from 2008 to 2011. He is a member of the USU Athletics Hall of Fame. His college career included finishing with 446 total tackles, tying for the school record.
During the ceremony, Wagner joked about his new title. “If you didn’t know, my name is now Dr. Bobby Wagner,” he said. He added, “And to any family members here, you need to update my name in your phone. It’s ‘Dr.’ now. I will no longer respond to ‘Bobby.’ It’s Dr. only.”
Wagner’s number 9 jersey will be retired by Utah State, making him the third player in program history to have his number retired. This honor reflects his significant contributions to the university’s football program.
Currently, Wagner is a free agent after his contract with the Washington Commanders expired. He was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft and has since recorded over 2,000 tackles and achieved 39.5 sacks during his NFL career.
Wagner has earned 10 Pro Bowl selections and won a Super Bowl championship. In 2025, he received the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award for his leadership and community impact.
His commencement speech emphasized important life lessons. “Take your shot, trust your journey, and never forget where you started,” Wagner advised graduates.
