Significant Climate Action Forum Highlights Importance of Women’s Leadership

The MSU-IIT Project CLIMA recently convened more than 150 participants for an online forum focused on climate action, emphasizing the critical role of women’s leadership in addressing environmental challenges. The event, titled “From Civic Duty to Climate Action: Your Role Matters,” took place on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

Cris Gel Loui A. Arcadio served as the keynote speaker, where he underscored the alarming threat posed by microplastic pollution to global ecosystems. Arcadio described mangrove forests as “natural climate defenders,” highlighting their essential role in protecting coastal areas and biodiversity.

The forum also aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5, which promotes gender equality and women’s leadership in climate action. The event aimed to raise awareness and mobilize community engagement, in line with SDG 13, which focuses on climate action.

Additionally, the discussions addressed SDG 14, which targets marine pollution, including the pervasive issue of microplastics, and SDG 15, emphasizing the need for ecosystem protection, such as the conservation of mangrove habitats.

Organized in partnership with the National Service Training Program (NSTP) and the Gender and Development (GAD) office of MSU-IIT, the forum highlighted the importance of collective action in combating climate change. The activity underscored the importance of women’s leadership in climate action, a theme resonating throughout the discussions.

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, forums like this play a crucial role in fostering dialogue and inspiring action among diverse community members. The emphasis on women’s leadership is particularly significant, as it encourages a more inclusive approach to environmental stewardship.

While the event successfully brought together a wide range of participants and highlighted pressing environmental issues, details remain unconfirmed regarding any follow-up initiatives or specific actions that will emerge from this forum.
