Kate Garraway confirms dash to hospital over fears of heart attack

Kate Garraway was rushed to hospital last year over fears she was having a heart attack.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, who has been caring for her husband Derek Draper for over three years after he almost died from Covid, recalled waking up one morning in November 2022 with a crippling pain in her chest.

Regardless, she headed to work but was had to stop the car to be sick on the way.

‘There was a searing pain in my chest — as though someone had punched their fist through my breastbone, snatched hold of my heart and squeezed,’ she wrote in her upcoming book, The Strength of Love, via The Sun.

‘The pain was sharp and excruciating. Then I realised that it wasn’t a sudden onset of pain. It had been there all the time. My temporary paralysis had distracted me …’

She continued: ‘[After getting in the car] nausea swept over me and I asked the driver to pull over. I was sick in the kerbside drain, cringing at how shameful it was.

‘I got back into the car, the pain in my chest now all-consuming and creeping up my neck and into my jaw. When we got to the studios, I went straight to my dressing room and collapsed on my sofa.’

Kate called ITV’s daytime TV doctor Dr Hilary who then urged her to go to hospital. She refused to allow staff from her show to call an ambulance but took herself to a nearby accident and emergency department accompanied by a junior producer.

Thankfully doctors assured she wasn’t having a heart attack but did stress Kate needed to take better care of herself with the stress of caring for her husband Derek.

She confirmed doctors are keeping an eye on her condition.

‘It might have been stress-related angina,’ she explained. ‘Or it could also have been my body’s response to stress in general. But it has forced me to make some changes.’

In a new interview with The Times, Kate revealed her husband has now developed a terrifying new condition which can see him ‘choke and turn blue’.

The Strength of Love will be available from September 14.
