Fayette County Public Schools will be closed for a Non-Traditional Instruction day on March 17, 2026, due to adverse weather conditions. The announcement follows an earlier decision to implement a two-hour delay in response to road conditions and traffic accidents.
Dr. Demetrus Liggins, the district’s superintendent, emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “Given the rapidly changing weather conditions, our primary focus was the immediate safety of our students.” The decision to close schools was made to ensure that students and staff would not be put at risk during their commute.
This closure comes after a communication issue regarding the announcement of the two-hour delay, which may have caused confusion among parents and students. The district’s swift response reflects a commitment to prioritizing safety in unpredictable weather.
In addition to the closure, Fayette County Public Schools recently celebrated student achievements in the 2026 Kentucky MathCounts state contest. Bourne Fan of SCAPA emerged as the overall top individual scorer, while Alex Wang from Winburn Middle secured third place. Aarav Tibrewal from Beaumont Middle also performed well, finishing ninth among individuals.
The top four students from the MathCounts competition will advance to the national level, competing in Orlando, Florida, on May 10-11. SCAPA and Winburn Middle also performed admirably, with SCAPA being the runner-up in the state team standings and Winburn Middle placing third.
Fayette County Public Schools had nearly a dozen students place in the state’s Top 30 in the MathCounts competition, showcasing the district’s strong emphasis on mathematics education. Kentucky MathCounts is a math coaching and competition program aimed at enhancing students’ problem-solving skills.
As the district navigates these weather-related challenges, officials are working to ensure that communication with families remains clear and effective. The safety of students continues to be the top priority as the community responds to the changing conditions.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any further impacts on school activities or schedules as a result of the weather. The district will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary.
