Lammes Candies, a cherished Austin institution, is closing after 141 years of operation. The family-owned business has been a significant part of the community since its founding in 1885. The decision to close comes amid unprecedented economic pressures and challenging market conditions.

The company announced that all locations would cease operations, including its flagship store in Austin, which opened in 1956. The Round Rock location closed on April 24, 2026. Lammes Candies was originally established as Red Front Candy Factory by William Wirt Lamme in 1878.

The Texas Chewie Pecan Praline, first produced in 1892, became the company’s bestseller. This product contributed to Lammes’ reputation as a staple in Austin’s candy scene. Over its long history, the business has remained family-owned and operated.

The ownership team stated, “This was not an easy decision.” Lana Schmidt reflected on the legacy built over more than a century, saying, “I think we’ve built a legacy for the community.” The closure underscores the impact of economic challenges on local businesses.
