“I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years,” said Donald Trump regarding Iran’s peace proposal.
Iran presented a 14-point peace proposal to the United States through Pakistani mediators. The proposal includes a 30-day phase to transform a ceasefire into a complete end to the war. It calls for the US to lift sanctions, end its blockade, and withdraw US forces from the region. Iran aims to establish a new control mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s statement indicates he is likely to reject this offer. He believes Iran has not faced sufficient consequences for its actions over decades. The US wants Iran to give up its stockpile of over 400 kg of highly enriched uranium. Yet, Iran rejected the demand to dismantle its nuclear infrastructure.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry stated that the proposal did not include any nuclear clauses. A senior Iranian official mentioned that negotiations over the more complicated nuclear issue have been moved to the final stage to create a more conducive atmosphere.
The situation has intensified recently as Iran has been blocking nearly all shipping from the Gulf for over two months. This blockade affects about 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies.
Iran’s proposal also suggests a strategic dialogue with neighboring Arab states as part of building a new Middle East security system. Officials have not confirmed the exact wording of the US response to Iran’s proposal, leaving uncertainty about future developments in US-Iran relations.
