Gaethje’s Future and Pimblett’s Challenge
Justin Gaethje, the undisputed UFC Lightweight champion, recently indicated he is not interested in a rematch with Paddy Pimblett. This comes a month after Gaethje secured the 155 lb title at UFC Freedom 250 in Washington, D.C., by forcing a corner stoppage against Ilia Topuria. Gaethje has not yet announced whether he will continue his career or retire following his historic win.
When asked about a potential rematch with Pimblett, Gaethje responded, “No. No. No.” He made these comments during an appearance on Pat McAfee‘s show. This stance leaves Pimblett’s aspirations for another shot at the champion in question, especially with Gaethje still holding the belt.
Pimblett, known as “The Baddy,” re-entered the Lightweight title conversation after submitting Benoit Saint-Denis in 52 seconds at UFC 329 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Following his victory, Pimblett expressed his desire for another chance at UFC gold and suggested he could become a prominent figure for the organization after Conor McGregor‘s injury loss. He specifically mentioned wanting another fight against Gaethje, who defeated him earlier in the year at UFC 324.

Despite Pimblett’s recent performance and expressed interest, a rematch with Gaethje does not appear to be on the champion’s radar. The Lightweight division faces uncertainty as Gaethje considers his next steps, impacting the title picture for other contenders.
Impact of Gaethje’s Victory and Divisional Dynamics
Gaethje reflected on the broader impact of his win over Topuria, noting how it has influenced other fighters. He mentioned Rafael Fiziev, a fighter he competed against twice, stating that Fiziev felt rejuvenated by Gaethje’s victory. Gaethje highlighted the respect athletes have for the sport, describing it as humbling, primal, and a one-on-one competition.
Gaethje had previously defeated Pimblett by unanimous decision to claim the interim lightweight title at UFC 324. He then unified the belt by defeating Topuria via a Round 4 doctor’s stoppage TKO at UFC Freedom 250. This history between Gaethje and Pimblett, coupled with Gaethje’s recent title unification, shapes the current landscape of the Lightweight division.
Gaethje has also offered his perspective on a hypothetical matchup between Topuria and Pimblett. He told UFC on Paramount+ that Topuria is “one of the most dangerous fighters” and “a lot more dangerous than Paddy Pimblett.” However, Gaethje also acknowledged Pimblett’s unique fighting style, describing him as “goofy” in a positive sense, with a “funky style” that makes him difficult to hit due to his length and unconventional angles.
Gaethje believes that while Pimblett’s unpredictable style can lead to success, Topuria would likely prevail in most encounters. He stated, “I think 97 out of 100 times, Ilia beats him up.” This assessment further underscores the perceived difference in skill and danger between Topuria and Pimblett, according to the champion.
With Gaethje’s future uncertain, the Lightweight division remains in a state of flux. Arman Tsarukyan and Charles Oliveira are currently considered ahead of Pimblett in the title contention hierarchy. This suggests that Pimblett may need to wait longer for another opportunity to compete for the UFC Lightweight championship.
Pimblett’s recent win at UFC 329 was a co-main event, where he faced Benoit Saint-Denis at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
