Potential trade for Kawai Leonard faces complications
The Dallas Mavericks have reportedly engaged in trade discussions with the LA Clippers concerning Kawhi Leonard, a two-time Finals MVP. The proposed trade package has included P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson, and draft capital, though additional components would likely be necessary to align with financial requirements. However, reports suggest that two main issues could prevent a trade from materializing.
One significant hurdle is an ongoing NBA investigation involving Leonard and the Clippers. This investigation stems from allegations that the Clippers may have attempted to circumvent salary cap rules. Early in the season, discussions centered on a potential endorsement deal between Leonard and Aspiration, a company that had a substantial deal with the Clippers. The Clippers owner had also invested in Aspiration.
Leonard reportedly signed an endorsement deal worth a significant amount annually but did not appear in any promotional campaigns. A dispute reportedly arose when Leonard began missing games, allegedly due to not receiving endorsement payments from Aspiration. The company has since declared bankruptcy, and one of its co-founders has been sentenced to federal prison for wire fraud.
The NBA is still investigating whether this endorsement deal was a method to bypass the league’s salary cap regulations. This ongoing inquiry could complicate any trade involving Leonard. However, NBA insider Jake Fischer has indicated that there is no current suggestion that the league office would block a potential Leonard trade due to the incomplete investigation into salary cap circumvention allegations.
Contract situation and trade destination
The second factor complicating a potential trade for Leonard is his current contract status. He is entering the final year of his deal, which is valued at over $50 million.
This situation echoes a previous move by Masai Ujiri, who, while leading the Raptors, traded for Leonard in 2018 despite Leonard being in the final year of his contract and without a promise of an extension. That particular move resulted in a championship for the Raptors, though Leonard subsequently departed for LA that offseason.
If Leonard is indicating a preference for only one team for an extension, it could make other teams hesitant to trade valuable assets for him. Fischer also reported that Dallas is not currently considered a likely trade destination for Leonard and has not been presented to him as such. It appears the Mavericks may not be a serious option for acquiring the player.
Meanwhile, in other league news, Draymond Green has opted out of his contract, potentially allowing the Warriors to pursue LeBron James in free agency and Anthony Davis via trade. To facilitate a trade for Davis, the Warriors would need to include Jimmy Butler to match salaries, as his salary closely aligns with Davis’s $58.5 million. Green’s decision to opt out of his $27 million contract was necessary to provide the Warriors with enough financial flexibility for these potential moves.
The Raptors are reportedly looking to be opportunistic in the trade market, with point guard and center being identified as primary needs, though they are also exploring other options, including looking to the past for potential acquisitions.
If Green were to renegotiate his deal to remain with the Warriors for three years at $52 million, it would reduce his salary for the 2026-27 season by $11 million.
