NBA free agency 2026: Harden declines option, Leonard trade talks ongoing

NBA free agency 2026: Bobby Marks' 30-team preview

The NBA free agency period officially begins on Tuesday, June 30 at 6 p.m. ET, following a week of significant activity since the draft. Several key players have made decisions regarding their contract options, while trade discussions continue for others.

Among the notable developments, James Harden declined his option with the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday morning. Reports indicate that Harden intends to sign a new multi-year deal to remain with the Cavaliers. This move allows Harden to secure a larger overall contract and helps the team manage its salary cap by potentially offering a lower annual salary over more seasons.

Similarly, Draymond Green reportedly declined his option with the Golden State Warriors. This decision could provide the Warriors with cap flexibility, potentially enabling them to pursue LeBron James in free agency or acquire Anthony Davis via trade, according to reports.

Player Options and Contract Decisions

Other players have also made decisions regarding their contract options. Fred VanVleet reportedly opted into his one-year, $25 million player option with the Houston Rockets for the upcoming season. This decision comes after VanVleet missed the entire previous season due to an injury, and he is expected to aim for a return to form in 2026.

Zach LaVine of the Sacramento Kings picked up his $49 million player option for the 2026-27 season, thereby forgoing free agency for another year. This move places the Kings at the second apron and $16 million over the luxury tax threshold, according to one report.

Meanwhile, Sandro Mamukelashvili is declining his $2.8 million player option with the Toronto Raptors for the 2026-27 season, making him a free agent. He is considered one of the available free-agent centers.

The Brooklyn Nets have also been active, declining team options for both Josh Minott and Day’Ron Sharpe. Both players are expected to return to the Nets on new deals, with Minott reportedly set to sign a two-year, $9 million deal and Sharpe a two-year, $20 million contract. The Nets also declined the $6.5 million team option for forward Ziaire Williams, making him an unrestricted free agent. The Los Angeles Lakers may be interested in signing Williams, who averaged 10.2 points last season.

The Atlanta Hawks have fully guaranteed Buddy Hield’s $9.66 million salary for the 2026-27 season. Hield, who shot 35% on 3-point attempts last season, also has a $10 million player option for the 2027-28 campaign.

Trade Discussions and Team Strategies

Trade talks are also a significant part of the current free agency landscape. The Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors are reportedly engaged in discussions concerning Kawhi Leonard. Leonard, who is in the final year of his contract, is said to be considering an extension only with Toronto. The Dallas Mavericks are also reportedly interested in acquiring Leonard, with a potential trade package built around Klay Thompson, P.J. Washington, and draft picks. Any trade for Leonard would likely depend on him agreeing to a contract extension with the Mavericks.

The Miami Heat are actively seeking 3-point shooters to complement Giannis Antetokounmpo. Among their targets are Tim Hardaway Jr., a Miami native who shot 41% on 3-point attempts last season, and Khris Middleton, a former teammate of Antetokounmpo. Other players on Miami’s radar include Landry Shamet, Anfernee Simons, and Quentin Grimes. The Heat may also look to re-sign Norman Powell.

The free agency period, while not expected to radically alter the league’s landscape, could help several teams make important advancements. The official negotiation period for free agency begins on Tuesday, June 30.
