Michigan State hockey has achieved a significant milestone by earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the third consecutive year, marking the first time the program has reached this feat since 2006, 2007, and 2008. The Spartans, with a season record of 25-8-2, will face the No. 4 seed UConn Huskies, who have a record of 20-12-5, in the Worcester regional.
This matchup will be historic as it marks the first-ever meeting on the ice between the Michigan State Spartans and the UConn Huskies. MSU coach Adam Nightingale expressed excitement about the upcoming game, stating, “We’re excited to get playing.” Freshman forward Ryker Lee echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s real now, and I can’t wait.”
The Spartans are looking to bounce back after being eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season by 4-seed Cornell. Captain Matt Basgall noted, “We’re extra excited because of the way it ended last year,” highlighting the team’s determination to advance further this time around.
In addition to their NCAA tournament success, Michigan State has also won its third consecutive Big Ten regular-season title this year. The program has made 30 NCAA Tournament appearances, ranking seventh among NCAA Division I institutions.
As the tournament progresses, the Frozen Four is set to be held at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on April 9 and April 11. With only 10 games remaining in the season, the Spartans are focused on making a deep run in the tournament.
UConn’s Ryan Tattle leads his team in scoring with 13 goals and 19 assists, while Joey Muldowney has contributed significantly with 17 goals and 11 assists. Coach Nightingale acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, “It’s not easy to make the tournament, and now whoever you play is going to be a good team.”
As the teams prepare for their matchup, observers are keen to see how Michigan State will perform against UConn and whether they can capitalize on their strong season to advance further in the NCAA tournament.
