A Place in the Sun's Ben Hillman has given a sad update to his loyal fans on social media.

Ben, 32, has presented the Channel 4 show since 2016, helping expats find the home of their dreams in sunny destinations.

But off-camera, Hillman has set himself a challenge to better himself throughout the course of the year.

Property developer Ben entered the "Shed of the Year" competition and has been eagerly getting to work on building his new digs.

He has been consistently improving his shack, regularly posting a series of pics of the project, which he named Tangerine Dream.

Among the amenities of Ben's shed are an asymmetric office and studio, which he said was inspired by those in California.

Other features include a polycarbonate shed, paying homage to films made in the 1980s.

Ben has been keen to share updates with fans about his progress, giving tips and filling followers in on how his project has been going.

In one post, the property heartthrob explained: "It used to be a rather dark and gloomy corner of the garden and I really wanted to add year round colour; something to draw the eye come rain or shine."

But after a valiant effort, Ben broke the news that poor Tangerine Dream had not been deemed the winner.

Taking to Instagram, he lamented: "Well the results for Shed of the Year 2023 are in and unfortunately, it's not good news for Tangerine Dream. Hats off to Frankenshed."

Hillman explained that not only did his shed not win, it did not even win best in its category, leaving him devastated.

He joked in the caption: "As you can see, I am already working on its full demolition ready for the 2024 competition.

"It looks like I will fair better if I buy a flat-pack shed from Wickes and give it a lick of paint. None of this architecture self-build nonsense. Not that I'm bitter!"

Despite his failure to win Shed of the Year, fans of the Channel 4 show were quick to flood him with support.

One fan took to the comments section to write: "Ben! You OWN it… in more ways than one, yours is built to last… a bit like you, actually!"

A second user also gushed over Ben's space, saying: "They don't know a masterpiece when they see it – their loss!" followed by a tangerine emoji.

Whilst a third exclaimed: "I saw the so-called winning shed on This Morning and all I can say is Ben, you were robbed!!"

Ben eventually responded to the fans with a simple comment: "Thanks guys, I'll get over it in time."
