“What I love about this is that it’s so specific to the Philadelphia community,” said Michael Empric, reflecting on the significance of National Cheesesteak Day, celebrated annually on March 24.
This year, the festivities included a remarkable Guinness World Record set at Philadelphia International Airport, where the longest line of cheesesteaks measured an impressive 1,200 feet. The event utilized almost a thousand pounds of ribeye steak and 225 pounds of cheese, showcasing the city’s dedication to this iconic sandwich.
Empric highlighted the airport’s role, stating, “The airport is really the entry point for everybody coming into the city,” emphasizing how the event connects visitors with Philadelphia’s culinary culture.
Local establishments participated enthusiastically in the celebration. Pat’s King of Steaks offered free fries with any cheesesteak purchased between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m., while Geno’s Steaks ran a promotion where customers who bought four cheesesteaks received the fifth one for free.
Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop joined the festivities with a buy-one-get-one 50% off deal, and Hot Table offered $5 small cheesesteak paninis available in-store only. Philly’s Best provided a $2 discount on their Cooper Classic cheesesteak from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Additionally, Texadelphia served buy-one-get-one-free cheesesteaks, and G’s Cheesesteaks distributed free sandwiches from 1 to 3 p.m. These promotions reflect the community spirit surrounding National Cheesesteak Day.
Empric also noted the charitable aspect of the event, stating, “To do this in the airport and to donate so many of the cheesesteaks to TSA is really incredible.” This initiative not only celebrates the beloved cheesesteak but also supports local organizations like Philabundance.
National Cheesesteak Day originated in 1994 when four Philadelphia high school friends celebrated their love for cheesesteaks, a tradition that has since grown into a city-wide event.
As the day unfolds, Philadelphia continues to embrace its culinary heritage, with cheesesteak lovers eagerly participating in the various promotions and events that highlight this iconic dish.
