In Hoboken, New Jersey, a significant threat to activist Nerdeen Kiswani was recently uncovered. Just before the key development, the FBI and NYPD were conducting surveillance on a potential plot against her life.
On a recent date, authorities arrested 26-year-old Alexander Heifler, who had been planning to attack Kiswani’s home with Molotov cocktails. Heifler had assembled components for at least eight Molotov cocktails, including Everclear vodka, and had discussed his intentions with an undercover NYPD detective for several weeks.
Kiswani, who is 31 years old and a co-founder of the activist group Within Our Lifetime, was informed of the plot against her by the FBI. She expressed relief that the plan was thwarted, stating, “I feel very blessed that they were able to thwart this, but it’s something that is a constant possibility for people who speak up on behalf of Palestine.”
Following the arrest, Heifler was charged with unlawfully making and possessing firearms, which could result in a maximum of ten years in prison for each charge. Heifler reportedly intended to flee to Israel after carrying out the attack.
The operation that led to Heifler’s arrest was executed by the NYPD’s Racially and Ethnically Motivated Extremism Unit, highlighting the serious nature of the threat posed to Kiswani and other activists. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch commented, “This is exactly how our intelligence and counterterrorism operation is designed to work.”
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani also addressed the situation, stating, “Let me be clear: We will not tolerate violent extremism in our city,” and emphasizing that “no one should face violence for their political beliefs or their advocacy.”
The investigation into the plot remains ongoing, with more charges against Heifler expected as authorities continue to assess the situation. The Jewish Defense League, which has a history of violent attacks targeting Arab American activists, has been noted in connection with similar incidents in the past.
