Tennis players face threats ahead of Arizona Tennis Classic
Tennis players have become accustomed to receiving abuse and harassment on social media, particularly from bettors. Recently, the situation escalated for players Panna Udvardy and Lucrezia Stefanini, who both received alarming threats ahead of the upcoming Arizona Tennis Classic, scheduled to take place from March 10-15, 2026.
Udvardy, currently ranked 95th in the world, reported receiving threats that included a message to kidnap her mother and contained personal details about her family. “I was really scared, so I forwarded these messages to my parents,” Udvardy stated. She expressed concern over the response from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), saying, “The WTA tried to downplay the situation a little bit. I didn’t see any extra security being placed or any kind of real concern.”
In a similar incident, Lucrezia Stefanini also received threats prior to her match. She took immediate action by alerting the WTA, which subsequently provided her with additional security. “This should not be normalized,” Udvardy added, emphasizing the need for better protection for players.
The FBI is now contributing to an investigation into these threatening messages, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The WTA has stated that there was no breach of personal data, but the incidents have raised concerns among players and officials alike.
According to a report commissioned by the WTA in 2024, 15 cases of abuse were reported to law enforcement, indicating a troubling trend in the sport. As the Arizona Tennis Classic approaches, the prize money for the tournament is set at $300,000, with significant amounts allocated for various stages of the competition, including $48,000 for the singles winner.
With the tournament just days away, players and officials are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a resolution that ensures the safety of all participants. Observers are calling for increased security measures to protect athletes from harassment and threats, as the sport grapples with these ongoing challenges.
