Strictly duo praised after breaking record for the first time in 13 years

Strictly's Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin very nearly got a full 40 from the judges – but lost just a single point.

Despite not getting a 40 in week five, the pair were informed that they still broke a record with their high score of 39 from the judges. Craig Revel Horwood kicked it off with a nine, followed by tens from Motsi Mabuse, Shirley Ballas and Anton Du Beke.

The duo went to talk to Claudia about their performance while they waited for the judges scores to come in, and after hearing the results, they were thrilled. The host told the pair: "We haven't had a 39 in week five for 13 years."

Nikita stood up on the table before jumping off after showing off his excitement. Meanwhile, their co-stars also rushed to swoon over the duo.

The judges hit them with some incredible feedback as Motsi said: "You guys, I could just steal you and put you in that show." Meanwhile Shirley added: "You are both on the same page with the choreography… nothing ever looks ugly, untidy, in this style of dancing.

Their incredible performance comes after another week of Layton fighting off the trolls who have complained about his dance experience. Layton, who has trained in musical theatre and once starred as both a young Billy Elliot and a young Michael Jackson, defended himself earlier this week.

He told The Guardian: "I've taken it on the chin, I get what everyone's saying. But if you could be a fly on the wall in this rehearsal room, it's not easy for me."

Layton added that he wants to "rise to the challenge". So far he has won over the judges and has been topping the leaderboard each week.

Week five has been quite the surprise for fans as the celebrities really appear to have pulled it out of the bag. While Nikita and Layton are at the top of the leaderboard, Ellie Leach and Vito Coppola aren't trailing far behind with a whopping 37.

Sadly one contestant, Amanda Abbington hasn't been able to dance this week due to medical reasons.

Strictly Come Dancing continues tomorrow night on BBC One.
