USPS to Open New Post Office in Hågat
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced plans to open a new post office in Hågat, proposed to be located at the Old Fire Station. This development follows the closure of the previous post office in June 2022 due to safety concerns, including mold and structural damage.
The announcement comes shortly after a significant ruling from the Supreme Court on February 24, 2026, which determined that the USPS cannot be sued for intentional delivery issues. This 5-4 decision, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing the majority opinion, has implications for how the Postal Service handles customer complaints.
Currently, residents of Hågat have been retrieving their mail over the counter at the Hagåtña Post Office since the closure. Del. James Moylan noted that constituents had urged him to address the post office situation after the temporary closure was implemented over three years ago, prompting his office to intervene.
In addition to the new post office, the USPS is also set to conduct its next Postal Pulse employee survey from March 10 to April 17, 2026. Participation in this survey is voluntary, and individual results will remain confidential.
The USPS delivers over 300 million pieces of mail per day and receives approximately 300,000 customer complaints each year alleging misconduct. The recent Supreme Court ruling may affect how these complaints are processed, particularly concerning claims of intentional non-delivery.
Hågat Mayor Kevin Susuico expressed optimism regarding the new post office, stating, “We are confident that the long-awaited resolution of the post office situation will be achieved in the coming months.” This sentiment reflects the community’s anticipation for improved postal services following the prolonged inconvenience.
