Victor Wembanyama, the star player for the San Antonio Spurs, has been announced as the cover athlete for the standard edition of NBA 2K27. This marks a significant milestone for Wembanyama, who recently completed his third season in the NBA. He expressed that being featured on the cover is a “dream come true.”
Wembanyama, at 22 years old, has quickly established himself as a dominant force in the league. His accolades include being the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, a two-time all-star, and a member of the All-NBA First Team. He has also been named to the All-Defensive First Team twice and was the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year.
During his last season, Wembanyama averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 3.4 blocks, and one steal over 64 games. His performance led him to finish third in the MVP voting. He also played a pivotal role in leading the Spurs to the 2026 NBA Finals, where they ultimately lost to the New York Knicks in five games. He was also named the Most Valuable Player of the 2026 Western Conference Finals.
Multiple Cover Athletes for NBA 2K27
The latest installment of NBA 2K will feature a trio of athletes across its various editions. Alongside Wembanyama on the standard edition, Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark will be featured on the deluxe edition, representing the WNBA. NBA legend Derrick Rose will grace the ultra-deluxe edition, marking his second appearance on an NBA 2K cover, having previously shared the cover of NBA 2K13.
Clark, a prominent player for the Indiana Fever, continues the trend of including a WNBA player on one of the game’s covers. She recently achieved a historic milestone by recording 45 points and 10 assists, becoming the first player in WNBA history to achieve 40 or more points and 10 or more assists in a single game. Clark is a three-time All-Star and was the WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2024, following a decorated collegiate career at Iowa.
Derrick Rose, the Kia NBA MVP in 2010-11, will appear on the ultra edition. He was the youngest MVP winner in league history at 22 years old when he earned the award. Rose, who was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2008 Draft, averaged 17.4 points and 5.2 assists across 723 regular-season games. He is a three-time All-Star, was named to the All-NBA First Team in 2010-11, and was the Kia Rookie of the Year in 2008-09.
Release Information and Previous Cover Athletes
The standard edition of NBA 2K27 is scheduled for a wide launch on September 4. Players who purchase the deluxe and ultra editions will receive early access to the game, beginning on August 28.
The announcement of Wembanyama as a cover athlete has also drawn attention from outside the sports world. Actor and director Ben Stiller, a known fan of the New York Knicks, responded to the news with a playful jab, referencing the Knicks’ victory over the Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals by stating “Knicks in 5.” Stiller was a regular attendee at Madison Square Garden during the Knicks’ championship run.
Last year’s NBA 2K26 cover athlete was Canadian player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Wembanyama finished third in Kia MVP voting behind Gilgeous-Alexander and Nikola Jokić.
The various editions of NBA 2K27 will be available for pre-order, with the official launch date for the standard edition set for September 4.
